  1. The elephant in the room is that because of multi-culturalism, infinite immigration and identity politics: there's nothing that unites Americans anymore. There's literally nothing that everyone can get behind, because everything the country was built around has been declared "problematic" and "white supremacist". To have a functioning democracy the people in a society have to believe that they have at least some things in common. That sense of commonality has been deliberately broken down by left wing ideologues over the last 50 years. Add to the fact that a common European heritage has now gone - and you have a situation where there's simply no reason for anyone to care about what happens to the country as a whole rather than their own little bit of it.
