Their belief that they are superior has been ingrained in them for so long they can no longer think differently even when it would be in their own interest to do so.

Dickensian society was healthier than ours is - they had less advanced technology than we do which is why there was more poverty and sickness, but in every psychological way there were much more robust and developed. They were even better educated if you look at the standard of literacy in newspapers from that era.

  198. @ I'm very open to the "this is deliberate" theory - there's a lot of evidence for it. The only caveat is that a lot of the people in power are extremely stupid (think of the Labour front bench) and I wouldn't put it past them to genuinely believe their own propaganda.
