@pancakes3250 1. NATO expansion was a reason for the war, but by far not the main one. The lesser reasons were NATO expansion, protection of russian speaking population (which yeah is actually a real thing, not that Putin actually cares about them) and denazification (which yeah you might not believe that but is a real problem in Ukraine, but once again not something Putin cares about). 2. Main reason were economic and political. In 2012-2014 right before Maidan there was a discovery of giant gas/coal reserves in the Donbass region. Yanukovitch, the president at that time, was talking to both Russia and EU about who gets the right to develop those. And he was leaning to the russian side, cause their offer was better. And then "suddenly" the Maidan started. After the revolution, the new ukrainian government, which was a bunch of for lack of better words "clinical idiots" broke a few agreements with Russia and provoked them even further. And they did manage to split their own people into two sides which started a civil war. Giving Putin all the excuses for the war. And on the political side Putin can use those lesser reasons to make him more popular.

@wai828 neither was there a legitimate election and a legitimate government after the Maidan. Yet USA and EU accepted that illegal election, but will not accept the referendum in Crimea. You know what this is called? Double standards. You have to either say both are legitimate or both are not.

No, they want to join NATO now. Have you listened to what they are saying? They are willing to start WW3.

@karsten11553 why should it be returned to Ukraine? There was a referendum with a majority voting for splitten from Ukraine and join Russia. If you do not accept that referendum as legal, well you must agree, that the ukrainian government that was formed after Maidan is illegal as well.

@geofflepper3207 yeah except for a few points. There was no invasion by the russian forces. There was a russian military base in Crimea for 2 decades. It was in agreement with the ukrainian government. The majority of Crimea population were and are russians. Dont believe me? Well there is a US survey from 2012/2013 exactly about that and it shows the same. Or was the US working for Russia? So clearly you have no knowledge about the history of that region, about their social situation and overall you have no vlue what you are talking about. But you run your mouth. Great succes.
