  1. Why should they? Defending is always more easy and causes less casualties. They kill more ukrainians and destroy more tanks with less effort. And while they are defending they can train new troops and prepare their own tanks. Later after Ukraine will waste most ressorces Russia can just come in and swoop them. And they need the time to prepare their troops/tanks because of the last few decades of corruption in the russian army pretty much turned it into a joke (if we talk about the commanding officers). On the other hand, on the global level Russia has not that much to gain from ending the war quickly. EU/USA will not lift their sanctions even if Russia would make advances. But their sanctions are so stupid, that they are hurting themselfs way more. In Russia the only people who actually auffer because of sanctions are the middle class, which pretty much does not exist there and some oligarchs.
