I dont know for sure if tax bracket is the same in Belgium as in Sweden, but i do think the tax bracket is EU wide. (its the same concept in Belgium just checked, the numbers might not be exactly the same)
If the car cycles in testing over 125g/km, the tax is increased by 30%, if its under like 75g it is reduced. If its a diesel the tax is also increased. if its under 24g/km, you get no tax. (the specific number change every 5 years)
And the tax it self is per km tax. So the tax increase quite a lot with higher consumption.
With a automatic car (slush-box) using 15-25% more fuel, and typically so does a V6. There is just no way of getting under the 125g limit with a Slush-box. So the tax will be insane. While the specific rule set change over time, it have been the situation with a heavily increasing tax with fuel burn.
So heavy cars, like medium size SUV, like a XC90, is pretty much sold exclusively as hybrids to cut down that number under the limit.
For electric car the number is 0, even if the power plant produce loads of CO2. So pure political BS. For PHEV hybrid that have a electric range of at least 50km, the number is cut by half. This is some bullsihtery. Because a say 2 ton XC90 hybrid will just hit under 75. A 2½ ton tesla X will be 0g. But a Renault Clio with a SLush-box may hit over 125g.
For robot-auto its very different story. Robo-autotypically test at lower value than manuals. My wife car have a robo-auto and its just hit under the lower bracket. She pays very little tax. My car is a slush-box, and its larger, i pay a enormous amount of tax.
The biggest irony of it is that my wife have a handicap that make here not be able to drive manual cars. But she have a full truck license. Luckily for here, over here basically all trucks are automatic.
The reason why automatic is becoming more common is for the very same reason. The robo-boxes to dudge the limit and the hybrids that are typically automatic.
