I really don´t like the "Europe got healthcare and USA got a army" meme. Its not like Europe don´t have army expenditure. Typically 1.5-2% for most European countries compare to 3.5% for USA. So yes, USA spend more, but the diffrance is not really that high.
For healthcare the diffrance is probobly even more surprising.
Total public healthcare spending (That is tax payers money) in USA PER person is $4000 while its in Denmark is $3800, in Sweden its $3000 and in Finland its $2400, and $4600 in Norway. (this is 2010 year number, but the amount between is about the same)
So USA taxpayers actually spend MORE money for tax payed healthcare than in most of the Nordic countries, only just Norway spending more. But US person spend an additional $4500 in private money for health care.
So why is healthcare so expensive in the US, it cost more than twice that of Denmark and almost 4 times that of Finland.
The first reason is really simple. Healthcare workers earn SIGNIFICANTLY more in USA than in Sweden or Denmark. If you are a healthcare worker, you might not believe that, but its actually the case. But Norway they make almost as much... and.. more amazingly, that is also true for Finland. So the higher pay is actually not at least the full story.
What about legal cost. Well Legal cost is a issue for US providers, but that is also not totally untrue in Europe. While legal cost is higher in the US; they are not zero in Europe. Still the diffrance is only about 10% for the total cost (while the relative diffrance is much higher). That also don´t explain the diffrance. Its also worth saying the existence of a legal cost is not totally negative.
Worse health of Americans. while, yes, that is also a factor, it don´t quite cover the diffrance.
Also worth saying is that healthcare (on average) is better in the US, carries about a other 20% of the diffrance.
The big diffrance is ever-greening. This don´t exist in Europe and its one of the biggest expense in USA. Not only that, in Europe (at least in Sweden) the system is built to push for licence free medicals. While there is a limit where you do no longer pay for your own meds, because meds are so cheap, virtually everyone (like except people with hiv, diabetes and cancer) pay for there own meds.
And even looking at diabetes, the meds are not that expensive. ITs about $20 for a month supply.
