No.. torque really don´t matter, power do.
Torque is really just what comes out of the engine. The gearbox will transform the tuque from the engine to what ever is needed.
The reason why trucks have so high torque have nothing to do with that trucks need high torque. No the reason is very different. Slow engines with high compression is more efficient, but they also give more torque. So the high torque of truck engine is a effect of trying to get as high efficiency as possible.
A lot of people just assumes that trucks need high torque, because they have it. No, its not even close to the case.
You don´t need to change gears more often in Europe, because most European trucks gave automatic sifters (not to be confused with automatic gearboxes).
While steep grades does exist in Europe, they are pretty uncommon on major roads. They are not non existing, but really quite uncommon.
Federal weight limit in the us is 80 000lb, not tons. I don´t know what they got that from. Is it Chinese tons?
Its Volvo and mack that shares data, and Scania and Man. mack is actually a volvo subsidiary today, they are basically volvo but with a different brand... Granted, most volvo trucks sold in US is based on Mack cabs.. that in turn have components from volvo.
Scania is 50% owned by Man that in turn is owned by VW that also owns Navistar that owns international. So i would guess that International, man and scania share engine parts.
