Mack and Volvo are pretty much the same trucks nowadays. Well at least mechanically. Also a lot of the swiches and gauges are volvo, its mostly the trim and boddy and chassie that is special. Volvo make (most) engines, Transmission, and other parts in a central location then ship them out to different manufacturing unit where they build the same parts into different chassis and bodies. Volvo, Renault and Mack is made all in the same volvo production unit n Brisbane in Australia . They have one manufacturing unit in pretty much every continent if not several. In USA they have one for Volvo and one for Mack in Europe they have one for Volvo and one for Renault. Volvo produce pretty much all of there trucks on the local market.

@otgiggs The frame, body and like 90% of the interior is made in the US. For the gearbox and engine its a bit complicated. The power-train is assembled in Hagerstown, Maryland. What i can get out of it its pretty much a power train assembly plant. So they build the engine, but don´t cast it. So it really boils down to the definition of enterly made in the US. Somethings will always be imported. Even at the main manufacturing plants, stuff like injectors, Volvo is not making them, but rather buying them from a other source.

The main problem with Autonomous vehicle, specially so trucks, is that if something happens, there is no hands on deck. Also it really only work for bulk or container transport. For pretty much everything else, there need to be a dude there securing the load, and also checking on it. I have a hard time seeing it really replace truck drivers. And that is from the view of me the engineer that don´t drive trucks but do work orders.

ITs worth saying there is a huge diffrance between Volvo and Scania in manufacturing. Volvo make the main components in Sweden, then ship them out in containers. All Scanians (part from the Brazilian once) are made in Europe. While Volvo (That also make trucks branded as Mack and Renault) have plants all over the world. In some cases they have different plants for different brands (like in the US), while in Australia the Mack and the Volvo branded trucks are made in the same factory. Volvo also got a bit more of a local styling while Scania look the same all over the world. Here in Sweden the Scania fans often joke and call Volvo third world trucks
