I've been watching Dorian spin its wheels for the better part of a day over the Bahamas. I've seen this before, and usually a hurricane that does this will, at some point, suddenly make a mad dash up the eastern seaboard, where I live. If Dorian took off this afternoon it could be off Newfoundland in 20 hours' time, if it confirms to that profile.
I live currently in Virginia Beach, and this storm will probably be a Cat 2 when it arrives, if it hugs the coastline, as most models predict. I live about 8 miles inland, and much of the area is marshy land reclaimed with massive landfill operations decades ago. We are 30-odd feet above sea level, but the water table lies just a few feet under our feet. I have been a bit surprised by how much it rains here - I had been living in Richmond, far inland and about 100 miles from here. And it rains a lot there. In heavy or protracted rains the fill soil here drains very slowly.
I am not concerned for our safely, but many people should be concerned for theirs. Here there will be many, many downed tree limbs to deal with, but some folks will not be so lucky.
