  1. I rode a Greyhound home from NYC to Richmond, VA with a bus driver (it was on the nameplate in front) named DICK SHOVER. Turned out he was from Richmond. I saw his mother's obituary in the paper a few years later. This is not even my best bus story. One time the bus broke down, and a carload of country - and I DO MEAN country blacks picked me up, along with a female friend I was traveling with. But first they had to stop by their house in the country - I mean this was SERIOUSLY rural, and a very humble wooden home FILLED with family and friends. She was terrified. I sized these guys up as good dudes immediately. And I was right; after an hour or two they took us to Richmond and dropped us where we wanted to go!
