Peas are the ultimate short-season crop. They're even grown on the Tibetan Plateau, where the season is so short the only other possible crop is barley, along with a couple strains of very short-season chiles.
Styx is right on the money again. RESEARCH what will do well in your climate zone, and buy individual seed packets that will produce in an even shorter season than what you usually have.
TAKE FAILURE INTO ACCOUNT in your plans. You will still experience some failures, but hopefully not catastrophic ones.
Many years ago I lived across the street from a YMCA, and I started thinking about how defensible it would be (with the help of so-called "like-minded" others). After all, it had an entire pool full of highly-chlorinated water that would be potable for a good while, would be highly suitable for bathing (although away from the pool), and it even had a rooftop where crops could be grown out of the view of roaming human jackals.
The point is, try to take everything into account. You will fail to plan for everything, but hopefully not catastrophically.
