I wonder if he would also be asking, "Where are all the slaves"

@FiddlerBob Well, he did say, "maintaining slavery was like holding “a wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him nor safely let him go.” So, don't let his own words rewrite history for you.

@gregbayne6229 What do you mean he knew where they were?
2
@bruceslain8069 what were the slaves routes in Ireland?
2
@Madisyn Issaquah Jefferson was a walking contradiction. Didn't want a standing Army but created West Point. Didn't want a president to be powerful but bypassed congress for Louisiana Purchase. Talked about the importance of freedom but had slaves. However, he was incredibly brilliant and important to founding.
2
@ronaldo his actions spoke, and his science game was strong.

@turtleLoC831 Again, he didn't want a standing Army but created West Point. Wanted a limit on president powers but used the office to go around Congress for Louisiana Purchase. Wanted freedom but owned slaves. Those are 3 examples of him being a walking contradiction. The apologist view of him just being a man of the time is weak. Plenty of men and women wanted to end slavery during his time. You would think being president might be the right time to push the issue.

@turtleLoC831 I get the pretzel you're in. Jefferson argued, "Standing armies [are] inconsistent with [a people's] freedom” and “completely adverse” to the “spirit of this country.” Instead of relying on the potentially despotic and overgrown institution of a standing military, Jefferson instead favored the use of militia." Those are his words, apologist in defending him just being a man of his times. Don't you think it's a contradiction to want freedom and write so beautifully about it but not allow the freedom to extend to all people? I think you might need to be more objective with Jefferson.

@bruceslain8069 How many Irish and Chinese slaves were on Jeffersons land?
1
@David Evans what benefits did native Americans, slaves, and women have during his lifetime? He didn't stop slavery did he?
1
@FiddlerBob Maybe the best attempt to rationalize I have read. He did use the word maintain didn't he?
1
@pinrockie well, sounds like what GOP wants to do with women today.
1
@seswf1375 Well, I guess all Watsons look the same to you.
1
@RR31982 I'm sorry, doubt what?
1
@ronaldo Becuase he could understand scientific advances and medical advances, he appears to not understand a US without slavery.
1
@ronaldo The issue isn't you being an American, I'm an American and served my country for 6 years. The issue was the hypocrisy of Jefferson.
1
@gregstack7772 What?
1
@jarberwoks8399 Weird, he was admendamt about not having a standing Army. Do you know that?
1
@Graham Jones Ahh, Jesus died didn't he?
1
@turtleLoC831 that's the hypocrisy. Why don't you see it? Jefferson wanted freedom but not for everyone. Freedom isn't a states rights issue. Freedom is freedom. Jefferson dramatically cut the military when he took office. I'm unclear what point you're trying to make. How about the Louisiana Purchase? Can you at least agree that was hypocrisy from Jefferson?

Walls might work. The one that was being built sure did not work.
