  2. Technically it was the Altera (Intel) / Xilinx (AMD) FPGA being phased out of their telco equipment with Chinese chips (either ASIC or FPGA). They aren't as power efficient or dense but if China insist on spinning new ASIC and replacing them more frequently, or use more power / cooling, it can be done with less advanced technology. So that's probably what happen: forcing your rival to evolute faster than anticipated.
