You think phone is bad, try movies and books. Very soon you cannot even buy a book and keep it for decades, you license it for your platform then when you go to a new platform you have to buy it again. Regarding to the washing machine rental: that is really either for renters who need a short term machine or a management companies who don't want to do the accounting / tie down to owning a machine and have to maintain it (foreclosure and temporarily owned by a bank). Those are not for normal people like us who stays in a place for 10 years and buy our own machines.
