  1. No it is because these states load up debts years ago. These debts are not only for 'services' but for 'tax cut'. As Louis said it is not a Democrats or Republicans only problem.

  2. This is the thing about tax: you will pay for it one way or another, or you need to go to the middle of nowhere and live without the urban amenity. Dirt road and septic tank, solar power off grid, satellite internet, and work from home, no school no children, then you are talking. The problem you are seeing here in Long Island and Jersey (and many other places) is the debt they load up back then to make people happy, they reduce tax and provide services that they can only afford to pay for by borrowing. Then there's also these deals like credit default swap that bankrupts county governments back in every single financial crisis. Voters typically don't care about fine prints when they vote, and they vote for politicians who do these swaps and other 'sales and lease back' deals to tax cut without service cut / service increase without tax increase.
