Also the opium cultivated in India and sold to china was what made Britain rich and funded Industrial revolution. Also British collected tax on all commodities including salt to fund the extravagant salaries and money that was send back to Britain which made the country rich. 20% of British exports were for India. Indian army and resources were used by Britain to win WW1 and South africa. So literally India funded Britain to become what it is today. Read the National Archives. Also Churchill diverted food grains meant for India even when he was aware many millions would die due to famine.

Opium trade with China was not done by East India company alone, but under the protection of British Empire who even fought the Opium wars. Birlas did not make any money from Opium trade. Parsis who TATA is part of made money from Opium trade as they were the agents of British. Standard of living is a comparative measure and anybody can claim that they had it. Trickle effect of Opium trace came to Indians does not absolve the lions share being taken by British. Does not matter where best Opium came from, British was responsible for pushing thousands into addiction to make money from their Opium plantations in India.

This resulted in inflation and famine.Taken from Churchill's Memo-Expending valuable shipping on Indians “scarcely seems justified unless the Ministry of War Transport cannot find any other use for it,” he added in a draft memo. (In the final version, this sentence was changed to a straightforward . recommendation against sending grain.). The document is public and you can access it in British library. Brtain got a lot of food from India for its troops stationed all across asia and africa. If Marwaris hoarded food, that was due to the lack of a government which at that time was british. No Indian province had autonomy or had the surplus food grains. Ocean was full of submarines, but churchill could get food from australia to Turkey. Absolute Tosh.
