Do you think they got there just because of their name? They were given more opportunities growing up because of their name, and money. But they had to have talent and work hard too. Being a legacy doesn't mean you're an automatic major leaguer just because of your name, that's completely asinine. It just opens a lot of doors.

@coolpeople4287 and it's either got some kind of insane movement or there's at least a threat that they'll throw something else. The closest we've ever seen to a one pitch pitcher really have success was Mariano Rivera, and he threw a cutter, not a straight fastball, he threw mid to high 90s but it was that plus the movement and placement that made him so good. And he was a freak. He was literally the only pitcher in the last century that threw the same pitch nearly every time and was still good.

Yea that's absolutely true, even an athlete that's a 100/100 in natural ability will eventually get passed by another 100 that works harder. You have to be strong and fast and all that, and some of us are born with greater gifts than others, but you get to a certain point as a pro where everyone is gifted, that's not good enough anymore. You have to work hard enough to make the most of those gifts.

@kevinscott9745 you're right about your previous comment too, put a baseball player on a basketball court or a football field, and they'll hold their own, obviously they're not going to be as good as an NBA or NFL player respectively, but they're at least going to look like they've played the game before, because they have. Baseball isn't the same at all, give an NBA or NFL player a bat and let them hit BP, it will be painfully obvious, immediately, whether they played baseball in HS or not. If they didn't play, they'll look like a turtle trying to surf. Just look at some of the hilariously awful first pitches thrown out by cross sport athletes. And that's just throwing a ball at a static target, that's basic shit for a baseball player.

He's saying genetics like height have a much greater impact in basketball than they do in baseball. Obviously you still have to have skill and work hard in basketball, and it still helps a hell of a lot to be big and athletic in baseball, but you see a lot more "average" sized MLB players than you do in the NFL and NBA, I'm using quotations because average for a pro athlete is still pretty damn big, but there are plenty of major league baseball players that you could see walking around and not immediately think holy shit look at the size of that monster. If you see an NBA or NFL player walking around, you would immediately notice them.

Well that's why you didn't go anywhere in baseball, if you think intelligence isn't a huge factor in hitting at the highest level. Once you get to a high enough level, everyone there has incredible hand eye coordination and athleticism. What separates the guys who stop there, and the ones who go on to have success, is that the best of the best have all of those things, plus they're extremely intelligent, and know how to make adjustments and think ahead of pitchers.

@kevinscott9745 another factor neither of us have touched on is just that not everyone plays baseball. If you've got a ball, a goal, and 2 people, you can play basketball. If you've got a ball, an open area, and 5 or 6 people, you can play football. Baseball isn't as easy, you've got to have a ball, a bat, at least 2 people just for batting practice, an open area, and more than 2 people if you want to do anything that resembles actually playing baseball. Not everyone does it growing up. I think I can speak for pretty much every baseball player, we all played basketball and football too, at least a little bit, just goofing off with our friends when it wasn't baseball season. It was unavoidable where I was growing up, if you played sports. I sucked ass, especially at basketball, but I played, we all played. It's just what you do. I always just wanted to play baseball, but sometimes everyone was playing football or basketball, so I did that.

@FalconPunch2012 if that were true, we wouldn't see such massive representation from some of the poorest countries in the world. The Dominican Republic makes up more than 15% of major league baseball. Being poor isn't an excuse to not succeed in life, American leftists just convince stupid people it's an excuse.
