@strategery101 didn't start it, he was part of the company that bought the UFC when it was going down in flames, and he took over as the President. 2000ish, don't know the exact date, but the UFC had existed since 1993, 7 or so years before Dana's involvement. But your general sentiment still stands, just a minor correction.

@strategery101 he definitely deserves a lot, if not most of the credit for where the organization has gone since he took over though, definitely more his doing than any other single person. It was a mess when he took over, on the brink of collapse. The former owner was probably glad he was able to sell it and laughing all the way to the bank at the time, and surely is kicking himself now.

Athletes are generally pretty smart anyway, at least elite athletes. There are some that are just really smart at their sport and pretty dumb in most other aspects of life, but it's not like they're just dumb brutes that survive on physical ability alone, that doesn't cut it when you're at the peak level of your sport, everyone has tremendous ability at that phase of the sport. The athletes who separate themselves as the best of the best are usually very smart, and find ways to strategize and outsmart their opponents. And this is even more acute in combat sports than in a lot of other sports, because it's not good enough to just be able to hit really hard when the other guy hits really hard too. You have to find a way to trick him into making a mistake, while he's also trying to trick you into making a mistake.
