I think boredom is a very overlooked and understated factor in everything that's so wrong with society, I'm 39, and part of a very unique generation that mostly grew up without the internet, not that it didn't exist, it just wasn't as common and frequently used until sometime in my teens. Being bored with your friends is part of how kids have grown up for all of human history, you get into trouble, you learn how to not get in TOO much trouble, you learn what kind of people are your friends, you learn what kind of people you shouldn't trust, and most importantly you learn to enjoy the really fun things, because they aren't always there whenever you snap your fingers.

The death of the family was already being snuck in the back door even back then. Think about just about every sitcom, the dad is a bumbling idiot that's always getting into trouble, and the wife is a patient and kind nurturer that always has to save the day, without ever getting any thanks. Obviously there are exceptions, but that was the general structure of the family unit on TV.

True, in the early 2000s, using race or racism as an excuse to avoid legitimate criticism would get you laughed at by everyone, because everyone realized how childish that was. It was like losing a game and making excuses about how the game isn't fair, or the other person cheated. Every adult knew that was just a childish adult refusing to accept responsibility. Now that behavior is encouraged.

@MatthewOlney nah, we knew what it was, it was just such an insignificant thing that it wasn't even worth a political discussion. The same as there are people with one hand, or one leg that's freakishly longer than the other. We know that exists, it's just not something you should spend a lot of time thinking about, and we sure as hell don't need to write legislation around it.

@pineapplepizza4016 oh yea, 100%. There's something about a group of boys riding their bikes towards some adventure that grips people, even people who never personally experienced it. And I think that resonates even more with viewers who didn't experience that, because you can tell even from the outside looking in that it was something you should have experienced, I think younger viewers know something was taken from them.

Not only that, I think it's an often overlooked factor in why society is just.... Wrong.

@derfalschejunge and that's the problem, you're not supposed to be able to do whatever you want, whenever you want to. That's not good for the human psyche. The average 20 year old would probably have a panic attack if the Internet stopped working for half an hour, because they wouldn't even know what to do.

@derfalschejunge permanent escapism is not good for your psyche, no matter how much you might think it is. There's a reason it's called "escapism", because you're not supposed to stay there, it's just supposed to be a temporary release from the stress and obligations of your real life, and then you go back to your real life. If constant stimulation on a screen all day every day makes you happy, then you're not really happy, you're hiding from the real source of your unhappiness. In other words, unplug from the matrix.

@asdergold1 modern video games have changed so much too, there's no such thing as "beating" the game anymore, you just keep upgrading to play some more to upgrade some more to play some more, endlessly forever and ever. It's much more geared towards addicting users than the older games, once you beat Zelda or Super Mario, you're not going to continue to sit and play it all day, you might revisit it and start from the beginning again, but after You've beaten the game, there isn't much left to do. Old games were disposable. New games are intended to grip the user until another new game comes out.

I'm 39, and my last remaining grandparent just died a few weeks ago. Both of my parents are gone too, my stepmom is the last survivor of the generations before me.

@derfalschejunge if you say so, you would know better than me. But temporary, artificial dopamine hits from video games and movies don't usually amount to sustained happiness.

@derfalschejunge well if you're using the internet to help get ideas for what you want to do in the real world, then you're not the person we're talking about.

@l33tninja1 yep. When I was a teenager, and the girl I liked didn't like me, I didn't have 50 other girls I could talk to online and pay for dirty pics, I had to just sit there and think about it. The pain was real, lol. I know it sounds silly, and as an adult, it absolutely is silly, but in that moment it's real. You grow stronger through those struggles. Teenagers now can just forget about it 5 minutes later. And they probably think that's better, but then when they're 30, and they're still single, and desperate, and lonely..... I doubt many people will connect the dots.

I don't think most conservatives are against working from home out of principle, it's the smug attitude that's typically attached to it, the lefty types that think they're entitled to just sit at home all day and get paid for it. If you're doing something productive that can be done from home, I don't think many conservatives would have a problem with that, most conservatives I know don't really care what you do (within certain confines, they would definitely look down on you if you're a hooker or a drug dealer or something) they mostly just care that you do something.
