In my admittedly limited experience knowing people who are or have been in an open relationship, it's almost always "more open" for one person, and the other just goes along with it. Either because they're hopelessly, pathetically in love with a partner who treats them like trash, or because they're in the relationship for something other than love in the first place, typically money or stability.

Most of the time, the person who initiated the open relationship just wants someone in the bullpen. Typically for money and stability, and sex if there's no other immediate and easy options, while they go off and do what they want on the side.

Sorta like that. Friends with benefits would be a more "no strings attached" kind of situation, whereas an open relationship would have the one string attached, that you still consider yourself in a relationship and sleep together, probably live together or at least spend a lot of time together. So I guess friends with benefits but just more involved.

Oh absolutely. Not because men don't sleep around, they just typically either cheat, or don't call anything a relationship in the first place. Weak men are also more likely to go along with an open relationship, and weak women are more likely to go along with sleeping with someone who has no interest in being in a relationship.

@hagoryopi2101 hey I'm no puritan, I don't have a problem with people being in open relationships if that's what they want. I would strongly advise against it if it's someone I care about, because in the real world, where humans are flawed and often act on emotion, it's probably a terrible idea and almost always leads to problems.

@hagoryopi2101 too bad jealousy and human nature exist, whether you would like to believe it or not. The traditional family unit, with a committed male and female father and mother has been the norm throughout most of human history for a reason, because it's the most successful family unit according to our inherent nature. You can be in a polygamous relationship if you want, nobody is saying you shouldn't be allowed to. We're just accurately pointing out that it's usually extremely dysfunctional, and both partners typically have some deep seeded emotional issues that lead to wanting that sort of relationship in the first place, and it usually only gets worse within these kinds of relationships.

Or rather all their other choices are less appealing to them, for some kind of internal reason that's probably a fundamental malfunction.

@hagoryopi2101 got any data that supports open relationships being overall successful in the long term? Or is this just more theoretical left wing nonsense that conveniently ignores the fact that human beings are flawed, and emotional, and greedy?
