I've worked at a kennel for 9 years, and the stereotypes about pitbulls aren't completely accurate, but aren't completely false either, they're just a little misguided. They absolutely are a dangerous breed, a very, very dangerous breed, but more often than being aggressive towards people, they're aggressive towards other animals. I think the biggest problems are that they're a high energy breed with a strong prey drive, so especially any dog or other animal that's considerably smaller than them or in any way distressed, squealing or running nervously, trying to escape, watch out, that animal is probably dead. And the main issue is just the type of people who are attracted to pit bulls. For whatever reason, they've become the official dog breed of ghetto people who just don't really care about properly training a dog, and get them as some kind of status symbol that they're "part of the culture", and also leftist feminist types, for some reason they love pit bulls. I think it's the "I can fix him" kind of attitude they tend to have, but I see a loooooooot of those types, usually lesbians, with absolutely horribly behaved pits that have no training whatsoever, absolute monsters that they like to act like are the most precious little perfect babies.

I think there should be licenses required for owning dogs. I usually hate legislating regulations like that, but just having a small fee and a one day course in dog training would do a lot for deterring people from getting a dog on a whim that they're not prepared to care for. Make the fee higher for more potentially dangerous breeds.

It's not always what you might think either, it's the ghetto people for sure, but the other demographic that loves pits is the feminist type woman, they love to adopt pits and try to "fix" them, but they tend to overcompensate and baby them, turns them into a one person dog that's hyper protective and doesn't take to strangers very well.

German Shepards are extremely dangerous, they're generally not as volatile as pit bulls, just because they're much more intelligent, easy to train. A German Shepard with the right owner is pretty safe, they would be fine around kids or other dogs or anything else. But they have a mouth full of razor blades and they're extremely powerful, I would rather be trapped in a room with an aggressive pit than an aggressive German.

@KyriosHeptagrammaton I've been bit about 100 times, but I also have worked at a kennel for 9 years. Lol. Occupational hazard. I actually don't get bitten very often at all considering the amount of time I've spent, and the fact that I'm basically the "naughty dog" guy, I have to deal with all the crazy dogs nobody else wants to.

@pbonfanti it has a lot to do with your attitude, dogs notice a lot of subtle cues about your posture and demeanor that humans usually don't. If you're nervous or scared at all, they know, and that tends to make them more on edge with you. You have to be calm and just know there's no reason for you or the dog to be nervous, which obviously is one of those things that's easier said than done. You can't fake it though, you have to really feel it.

@Educat ional best dog I've ever had was from a shelter, of course she was also a puppy, only about 6 months old when I got her, those are a bit rare to come by at a shelter. But if you're gonna paint with a broad brush that way, I would say purebred dogs are more of a powder keg than shelter dogs. If a dog is mixed breed, at least you know their mom isn't also their sister, so they're not gonna be 2/3 tarded.

@Educat ional you're taking just as much, if not more risk getting a dog anywhere else. If you're just talking about getting an adult dog, sure, an adult from a shelter can be dicey, but no more or less than getting an adult dog from anywhere else. Getting a puppy from a shelter is no more risky than from a breeder.

@elainejohnson796 no, it's definitely a thing, it's a bit of an industry joke. I've even joked about it with female coworkers who have pit bulls. I'm not saying they're all pink haired, hairy armpit, far left whacko radical feminists, just that the "girl power" kind of women are big time into pit bulls. I even have a bit of a superpower where I guess what the person is like just based on the dog breed and behavior, I'm pretty damn good at it. They don't even give me the mamas boy pit bulls anymore because it's too obvious, that's probably the #1 most dead on stereotypical cliche about dogs and dog owners.

@victoriapschen that's part of the issue, the bigger issue is that they assume that their dog will act the same way around strangers as they act at home. Of course your dog is going to be sweet and lovey to you, but putting them into different environments is a completely different thing, and since these kinds of people tend to not be particularly emotionally healthy, they don't quite understand that their perfect little angel baby isn't always a perfect little angel baby, and they're far more likely to put the dog into situations where they're likely to be aggressive.
