Equal opportunity is a liberal value. Nobody should be prevented from participating in society and working to earn a good life because of inherent traits they can't control. But you're not entitled to anything just because you want it. You're entitled to the ability to try and earn it.

The funnier part is watching them shriek and claw at their face because of how much Maher has changed. They're so delusional they don't realize it's them that have changed.

@JagerIV equal opportunity and equal outcome are completely different things though, to the point where they're directly antithetical. Equal opportunity is saying "everyone can fish", and equal outcome is saying "everyone gets a fish".

@angrynapolean3820 there's a difference between fair discrimination and unfair discrimination. Not everyone has the same abilities, so not everyone is going to have the same outcomes. If you're really short, there's things you can't do. If you're really stupid, there's things you can't do. That's fair discrimination. If your skin looks a certain way, that shouldn't effect your rights if you are a citizen.

Man YouTube sucks when it comes to that, I've set channels to notify when a new video drops, and I never get them, I also get notifications for channels I'm not even subscribed to. And even after I click on disable notifications, they'll still send me notifications from the same channels sometimes.

@JagerIV I never said all rights should be absolute and guaranteed, I just said that the liberal value of equal opportunity is not the same as equity. Some rights are guaranteed, some are earned. But every citizen should have the right to earn any rights and privileges that they want. You don't have to agree with that, but that is what the liberal values prescribe.
3
@Reddotzebra yep, that's the Marxist version of equity.

I'm so tired of these lefties of yesteryear coming around and lamenting about how far it's gone, and acting like it's not their fault. They pushed a boulder off the mountain, and when it makes its way to town and crushes everything, they pretend like its not their fault because they weren't actively pushing it through town.
3
@JagerIV no, it really doesn't. You nor anyone else in this thread has actually demonstrated how that's true, because it's not true. You've just said "forced equity is bad, therefore equal opportunity is bad", even though those are completely opposite ideas.
2
@baconboi4482 yep. Smokers aren't trying to get cancer, they're just trying to smoke. But they'll probably also get cancer.
1
@ShermanistDruid well there's always going to be tradeoffs, it's impossible to give everyone every freedom. That would mean the freedom to kill, but then the killer is taking away the victims right to be alive. This is the most extreme and obvious example, because we obviously infringe on the right to kill. But there are many other examples where it's not so clear. Trying to optimize individual liberties and balance that with justice and societal security is an ongoing battle, there's no one right answer.
1
@JagerIV and in modern terms of liberal vs conservative, the liberal would say "everyone can fish, and if you can't afford a rod we'll give you one", and the conservative would say "everyone can fish, but you have to supply all your own accomodations".

@Cozonac3000 equity in the Marxist mind just means nobody has more than them. They don't really care if people have less than them.
1
@murtisoft I don't see a problem with equal opportunity, the problem is that it hasn't been in practice for decades now.
1
@murtisoft so what are you all suggesting as an alternative to equal opportunity?
1
@JagerIV the problem here is you either don't understand what equal opportunity means, or you're deliberately misrepresenting the idea so you can feel like you won an internet argument. Nothing needs to be enforced, it's a lack of enforcement. It just means the state won't take away anyone's ability to try and earn whatever they want to earn. You seem to think it means everyone has a literal equal opportunity for everything, that's ridiculous. If I'm 5'3", 290 pounds, my opportunity to play professional basketball is pretty much zero. But that doesn't mean there should be a law against me trying, there doesn't need to be. I won't make it anyway. There's no enforcement necessary. It's quite literally the only way to determine who has what opportunities without any enforcement
1
@JagerIV by the actual definition of what the term means, yes, civil rights laws are antithetical to equal opportunity. You're going by the Marxist rebranding of the term, that's where the disconnect from reality is here. Marxists think equal opportunity means the state forcing universities to admit more black students. That is not equal opportunity. Equal opportunity means the state will not write any laws preventing black students from applying. Whether they're accepted into the university is entirely up to the university. I'm really not sure what you're getting at with public schools, you'll have to clarify that.
1
@murtisoft equal opportunity IS simple meritocracy. Holy shit dude, you just took the scenic route to explaining what equality of opportunity is, called it something else, and pretended like it was different.
1
@JagerIV you're arguing that equal opportunity doesn't exist in the way that the left defines it, so it's not a real thing. So people who don't believe in equal opportunity distort the meaning of it, and now you're against their make believe version of what it means. Yikes.
1
I like that analogy, because I've always said the left sees the culture war as a race, and they're shooting holes in our boat. They're too stupid to realize we're all on the same boat, and they're shooting holes in it.
