I don't dislike superhero movies, but damn I'm burnt out of them. They're popular because they're safe, you can just race swap characters and if you step on any intersectional toes, you can just blame it on the source material. I miss offensive comedies. Eventually some director and producers with balls made of steel will make an over the top, horrifically offensive comedy, and everyone will love it, aside from the extremely small and annoying outrage mob. And that will open the flood gates, all the other directors and producers will remember that it doesn't matter if a small minority of noisy internet losers hate you, the vast majority of people like funny movies that take chances.

@SeeLasSee I think they gained steam because it's safe, you can race or gender swap characters, it's relatively easy to cram a political message into superhero movies, and if you agitate the outrage mob you can just blame it on the source material. I'm not sure whether the wokeness was planned or not, but it's just a convenient vehicle for it.

@FalonGrey there's been some great superhero movies and series, like the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy, the Dark Knight Trilogy (aside from Dark Knight Rises having some gaps), but once the whole MCU thing started, the whole genre kinda morphed into uninspired, cookie cutter cash grabs.

@hummerskickass I also think a lot of people overlook the impact Robert Downey Jr. had on the whole franchise and the genre as a whole, half of the appeal of Iron Man is his impossibly magnetic charisma. That's what really roped people in and got them invested, I have a coworker that's literally seen every MCU movie and series, it's become like a job to her, even the ones she doesn't care about that much, she feels like she HAS to watch them, it's like collecting Pokemon cards to her.

@AMMAZZARE back in the day, it was trendy to shoehorn in not so subtle racism. The old kind of racism, like black and Hispanic stereotypes, not the new kind of racism where they just openly shit on straight white Christians.

We need to make disaster movies great again. I miss that. COSMIC EARTHQUAKE!!! Just random horse shit like that, even the bad ones are great because you know what to expect, explosions, catastrophes, and cheesy throw away lines, usually with a hot female lead that makes you feel dirty for being so attracted to someone half your age. Those were the good ole days.

@hummerskickass I'm glad I don't feel like I have that obligation, I've seen most of the more recent ones and some of the early ones, but I missed a huge chunk of MCU mostly because i was with my ex, and we didn't really watch movies, we just got drunk all the time. Lol. So I had about a 5 year window between about 2010 to '15 that I just didn't really see anything.

@hummerskickass lmao, no thanks, I begrudgingly have ESPN+, because I'm a UFC fanatic, have to keep up with as many fights as I can. But I'm not gonna give Disney any more money than that and seeing the occasional movie in theaters just to get out of the house.

@countpicula I didn't think Eternals was terrible, there was just too many characters with too many half stories attempting to be crammed into one movie. They should have focused on only a few of the characters so we got a more complete story about them instead of leaving so many loose ends and ending up with a bunch of convoluted nonsense trying to tell too grand of a narrative, but overall it was OK, still entertaining and has some good action sequences.

@josephmorelli3408 I've shown so many people that clip from Blazing Saddles, where the black guy holds the door open for the little old white lady. 🤣 Any time the topic of "shit you can't say in movies today" comes up.
