The idea is that if everyone left everyone alone, most people wouldn't deviate too far from societal norms. How many socialists do you think there would be if they didn't get a shitload of free money just for existing? Most of the luxury beliefs people with tiny brains hold on to can only exist in a society where they don't have to do anything.

Driving is all I need to convince me not to be a full on, big "L" Libertarian. People drive like psychotic maniacs, the majority of society cannot be trusted to act right.

About 90% of the arguments against libertarianism are deliberately dishonest. And I don't even consider myself big "L", I'm somewhere in between conservative and libertarian, but if you have to lie to represent libertarians as a cartoonish version of themselves, then they're probably not as cartoonish as the idea you have in your head.

Libertarians believe in a minimal amount of authority. If they believed in no authority, they wouldn't be libertarian, they would be anarchist.

The biggest error I see is people thinking libertarian is the same thing as anarchist. If that were true, we would just call ourselves anarchists. Libertarians don't believe in a total abolition of the state, we just think that many of the things that are thought of as necessary for the state can actually be more efficiently solved through social contracts, and that government intervention should only happen when necessary.

@Si_Mondo but what's the point of having rules if they're not enforced? They have to be enforced by someone, and that doesn't have to be one specific person, a governing body works the same. You can't just say society will enforce its own rules, that doesn't work, that's just an angry mob. You trying to make a distinction between a "leader" and a "ruler" is also pedantic nonsense, a leader is just someone who makes sure the rules are being followed. You know, like a ruler?

@schnek8927 conservatives and libertarians are both right wing, but that doesn't mean they're the same. Conservatives are just more centrist, "taxes are fine, but they're too high right now", whereas a libertarian would be more likely to want to either dramatically cut taxes or abolish them. You're the one acting like a leftist here, gatekeeping what you want words to mean to better suit your views. I'm the one being honest and seeing the world how it actually is.

A lot of people don't seem to understand that libertarian and anarchist aren't the same thing. If they were the same thing, we wouldn't even say libertarian, we would just say anarchist.

@schnek8927 history loves to rewrite things so they can try to even out the baddies on both sides. Fascism and Nazism are considered "far right" just because they opposed communism, but really all 3 of them are just different versions of far left authoritarianism. Far left authoritarians call themselves libertarian or anarchist, just because they want all the freedoms for themselves, at the expense of the freedom of the rest of society. It's not liberty if you wouldn't extend the same liberties you want to everyone else. True "far right" is anarchy, the opposite of tyranny. And it's just as nonsensical as absolute tyranny. The major difference between anarchy and libertarianism is that libertarianism is the idea of getting as close as you can get to anarchy without being an anarchist, just put the bare minimum structures of authority and order and leave the rest to the individual.

@HNedel I have, and it's utter nonsense. Rules aren't rules without someone to enforce them. They're guidelines. Saying "we have rules, but no rulers" is the political equivalent to leaving a big dish of candy in the driveway for Halloween, with a sign that says "please take one".

@HNedel the dealer and the casino would be the ruler in a game of poker, unless you're just playing with your buddies at home, in which case there really isn't a ruler, therefore there really aren't any rules. Obviously there are agreements, but if you don't like the agreements, or pseudo rules of the game, you can just leave. This doesn't scale up much larger than a friendly game with friends, because we can't really give people the option to just not participate in rules they don't like, because then they wouldn't really be rules at all, would they? And just because not everyone steals the pumpkins every single time doesn't mean everyone pays for them either. Likewise with basketball, the referee would be the police of sorts, he enforces the rules, the commission and the governing body of the NBA would be the rulers who make the rules.

@kasimirfreeman it's very frustrating how people just refuse to understand that there's a difference between libertarian and anarchist. And that's exactly what it is, it's a refusal. It's not a lack of understanding. It's an outright refusal to even try and understand.

@MattGM97 it is an umbrella term, there isn't really a set core of beliefs that all libertarians share, similar to socialists having varying different brands of socialism. It just means an emphasis on individual liberty over collective authority, it doesn't mean absolute liberty, all the time, it doesn't mean no authority, ever. Just that when you have to choose between freedom and security, a libertarian is usually going to choose freedom.

@MattGM97 I think understanding the difference between liberal and conservative helps get a better view of where libertarians stand, liberals and conservatives are both pretty moderate, and overlap quite a bit, but liberals are going to choose security more often, whereas conservatives will choose freedoms. Libertarians just choose freedom a little more than conservatives do.

@MattGM97 some form of authority is going to exist whether you like it or not, even in the total absence of an organized government, some form of mob or gang would take control. Most libertarians understand that, that's why they're not idealistic about taking a lack of authority to the extreme. The closest you can get to a "stateless society" like in the dreams of ancoms is a handful of hippies on a commune. And even that will probably devolve into tyranny over a certain amount of time.

Libertarians believe in minimal authority and government intervention, that the line is generally drawn at causing harm to others, and that's when some form of governance is necessary. Anarchists believe in no hierarchy, not ruling class. It's just a more extreme version of libertarianism, but it's not the same thing. If it was the same thing they wouldn't be called different things. Goddamnit this is so exhausting.

@ponsquiglious well my entire point is that if libertarian ideals existed consistently within society, most of the furries and gender benders and other freaks wouldn't even be freaks, because they would have to get off their ass and get a job. Nobody has time to be a furry unless someone else is paying their bills. And if they're just some rich bitch and daddy pays for their hedonistic lifestyle, cool, good for them, at least the taxpayers aren't being forced to bankroll it.
