It's always cracked me up how leftists will throw out the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" thing as some kind of "gotcha". Well.... Yes. Do that. I don't think even conservatives are denying that there are things outside of your control, obviously not everyone starts off in the same position in life, and that's not your fault. Being born into a shit family sucks, and yes, we feel bad for those people. But there are also things that are within your control. Telling people they should control those things and do whatever they can to improve their own life is not a silly argument at all, like they like to pretend it is. It's a very strong argument. Everyone can do it. Even if your starting position in life is at the very bottom, it's completely within your control to bring yourself up higher than that, even if the best you can do is just float somewhere towards the middle, you can give your children a better starting point than you had.
