I think the internet actually killed late night comedy, not leftist politics. Although leftist politics was definitely a factor, and sure as hell didn't help, it never does. It was just a dying art form though, at its peak, late night talk shows were a way to hear celebrities just be themselves and talk about stuff you otherwise wouldn't hear about. Now we know way too much about celebrities. Nobody cares anymore. We just want them to shut up.

And you typically have to fire shots in all directions, at least for the kind of comedy that's usually on late night. Even if you have a political bias, and you're up front about your bias, you still have to fire shots at your own side to really be funny, sometimes those are the funniest jokes because they're the most surprising. Just ranting on and on about the bad orange man isn't funny. It wouldn't be funny no matter who they're making fun of, if it's all pointed in the same direction, it's not comedy, it's a lecture.

I remember when the next recommended video was John Oliver, pretty much all the time, no matter what video you were currently watching.

Craig Ferguson is a genuinely funny guy, Late Night was a waste of his talent.
