I've always used the classic Star Trek movies and series as the gold standard for how you can write political messages into content that isn't necessarily political on the surface - they asked the questions but didn't give you a clear answer, it's not supposed to tell you what to think, it's supposed to present a difficult situation, where there is no perfect answer. And that's what makes politics so difficult, there are very often situations where you just can't make everyone happy.

And completely forget the very simple concept, that a truly interesting character is usually flawed and relatable. Their "champions" are always so detached from reality, the strong independent wahmens that can beat the shit out of 5 guys at once, are super intelligent and charismatic, that are only single because "no man is man enough to handle them". It's boring. At least give her a weird nervous tick or something, ffs.

Right? Now can we please get a really great adaptation of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, or Tekken? There have been a few that were ok, but none of them really got it, and it would be so painfully easy. Just fight. That's all. Talk less, fight more. Nobody plays any of those games for the cut scenes, I don't understand why every movie tries to make some intriguing plot.

@jflanagan9696 I watched this piece of shit a year or so ago called "Ava", about some super spy strong wahmens. And there was a scene towards the climax where she has a showdown with the male spy that was kind of like her MK1, he was trained by the same guy as her, they were supposedly equals in nearly all ways, and they have this brutal, drawn out fight where she eventually wins. I actually laughed out loud, like what is this shit???🤣 Alright, maybe some super trained elite spy chick can beat up some random thugs that don't really know how to fight, maybe she can beat up another spy chick, but how am I supposed to believe she can beat up another spy with equal training, but twice the physical strength and stamina? Come on man, I know it's a movie, but the "because wahmens" thing just tosses any semblance to reality straight out the window. She may as well have started flying and doing Crouching Tiger shit, totally ruined the whole movie. And it wasn't great even before that.

Yep, it didn't try too hard, it knew what it was. It was just fun and fast paced. I liked that movie a lot.

The new Candyman had one of the most egregious examples of that I've ever seen, in the climatic scene where he's with his girlfriend and a bunch of white cops rush in and empty dozens of rounds into him for seemingly no reason. It would have been so damn easy to have him reach up to hug or kiss her with his hook hand and some rookie cop comes in and shoots him because he's freaking out and terrified, that would have actually been consistent and conceivable. But nooooo, Jordan Peele just couldn't resist hammering down his narrative, "hey, in case you haven't noticed, white people bad. It's always white people bad." And this is completely overlooking the fact that it was like 10 white cops, in Chicago. Yea, X to doubt on that one. I'm pretty sure Chicago PD is a lot more "diverse" than that.

@bobmclovinelectricboogaloo it's actually pretty funny how Hollywood's "strong female leads" tend to actually weaken female characters in movies, not strengthen them. Most of the iconic male leads from action and thriller movies are flawed, they get beat up and knocked around, but they prevail in the end, they have qualities you don't necessarily like, but their redeeming qualities ultimately exceed that and you like them overall, or at least you want them to win. Sometimes you don't even like them at all but you still root for them. Those are the actually well written characters. Most of the women that get inserted into these roles recently aren't that at all, there's no suspense because they have that mystical "girl power" that gets them out of any bad situation, you don't really care about their motivations because they're portrayed as a cookie cutter cliche, they're all the same.

I think he used to be funny, Knocked Up, Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, Pineapple Express were all pretty great. Of course that was before woke culture took over, when people knew jokes were jokes, and you were allowed to be a little crude and inappropriate.

The funniest part about Hemsworth's "idiot" character, that was meant to be some kind of dig about how men are dumb and women are strong and intelligent, is how Kristen Wiig's character turned into a drooling blob of hormones every time he entered the room. Which makes her even dumber than him. Accidentally.

That seems to be an increasing problem with most MCU movies, whenever the hero is in a pickle they just bust out some invincible super superpower that would have been awfully convenient to use like I dunno..... Before they got in a pickle? So they didn't get into a pickle in the first place? Really kills a lot of the suspense, I've found myself actually thinking beforehand, "eh it's fine, they'll just bust out some invincible super superpower they never showed before." And then on demand, it happens.

I've been rewatching a lot of the old Star Trek movies lately, some of them are on YouTube movies for free. And damnit those are some rock solid movies, all of them. Well written, well acted, with a message that goes beneath the central plot. You actually care about the characters and they don't feel necessary to remind you who they are every scene, because they respect the viewer enough to know that you already know who they are. And they seamlessly blend humor in too, without having any clunky shift from serious to "this is funny now", it just flows along with the strong character development. At the risk of sounding like a boomer, "they don't make em like they used to".

You had me sold with the tribute to Harold Ramis, I've been wanting to see this and it'll definitely be the next movie I watch now. From every account I've heard from people who knew him personally, he was a really great guy, one of the rarities in Hollywood who really was genuine.

I think offensive comedies are gonna make a comeback soon. There's a big demographic that's hungry for some of the good old stuff, and the online outrage mob isn't as powerful as they think they are. All it's gonna take is one writer and director to not give a damn anymore, and just go for it, as over the top gross and offensive as possible. And when that movie lights the box office on fire for 3 straight weekends, all the other writers and directors will take notice.

I actually kinda liked it. It got pretty damn ridiculous at the end, but it definitely had some really good visual horror in the beginning. Got considerably less scary as you found out more about the plot. But I wouldn't say it's a bad movie.

He just doesn't take himself too seriously and isn't scared to get a little hammy in a serious role, but he does serious well too. There's no denying he breathed life into Captain Kirk that will never die, and always be iconic.

Not terrible either, they had some decent action, but they focused too much on this dystopian future plot, blah blah blah, we don't care, just shut up and fight more. It's so frustrating because it really was pretty good when they had the action scenes, there just wasn't enough of it.

@fr0ck360 Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday came out in '22, it's freaking amazing, one of the best sequels you'll ever see, and one of my favorite movies from last year. It's just as bat shit and over the top as the first one.

@jaegerbomb269 I know, I still go to movies a lot just because I like to, and I love the original Candyman so I thought I would give it a shot. What pissed me off the most is that it was otherwise an excellent movie, he's legitimately a talented filmmaker, although I know he was less involved in this than in Get Out and other movies. But it's still partly him. Just like his other movies though it's well put together, the production quality is excellent and they're well acted and visually great. It's a shame. If he could just set his damn political agenda aside for 12 seconds he could make some real bangers.

If this is the last major role she ever gets, and her career gets rightfully tanked because nobody cares about her self promoting bullshit, you might see her several years from now, complaining about the outrage cult.

Yea that was a surprisingly good movie, I didn't go in with high hopes, seemed like more girly schlock, but it was very well written and interesting. It actually respected the audience and didn't hold your hand and spell everything out as though you're too stupid to understand anything, I think that's a big problem with modern movies too.

@JS-oh2dp yea there are some extremes where it's pretty clear that one side is evil, we have seen that in politics and foreign conflict, but more often than not it's more complicated than that. The concept of freedom is a good way to illustrate that, it's not as simple as just turning the dial up to 11 for optimal freedom, if it were that easy, then every society would turn the dial to 11 and we wouldn't have to argue about it. It is complicated though, because there's no such thing as absolute freedom, turning the dial up to 11 would mean everyone gets to do whatever they want. Which means you could just kill someone because you want to. That's not very free for the person you just killed, because now they're not alive, and they have no freedoms at all. We have to limit the freedom people have to optimize the amount of freedom for the most people. And someone isn't evil when they say "you shouldn't be allowed to do this", and someone isn't good because they say "you should be allowed to do this".

They did such a good job with the political messaging that you actually agreed with the Nazis about certain things, not all things obviously, lol, but they made some really compelling points about the degradation of culture. They just jumped the shark for me personally when they attach it all to race.

@benjamingrant5970 dude, Nobody was badass, that was one of my favorite movies of the last few years. They really understood that when people say they want "original" movies, they don't necessarily mean something completely different and out of left field, a good ole fashioned action comedy is fine if it's done right. But it had original characters, it wasn't piggybacking off an existing property. It didn't cheap out on the brutality in favor of forced comedy, the humor just went along with the action.

@thant0s yea that was disappointing and awesome at the same time, when I heard he was in John Wick 4 I was stoked, I thought that could be his sort of coming into the mainstream. But then when I saw he was in a fat suit, with a German accent, because.... Reasons? Lol. A little disappointing, he was barely even recognizable. But at the same time, it was an awesome and hilarious Easter egg for his fans.

@AMG-ko3gt yea The Gray Man was excellent, I really appreciated how they didn't try so hard to be different it became a convoluted mess, it was a pretty basic, formulaic spy/action movie, but it was character driven and it was gritty. I hope other filmmakers take note of how well received it was and we start seeing more blasts from the past like that, who don't care about "THE MESSAGE".

@pokenoy4559 character development doesn't necessarily mean more screen time. In fact, most of the time when it's done right, character development can be done in short increments throughout the movie, it's most effective when you don't spell it out and put it right in front of the viewers' face, you let little pieces of the characters' story come up within the plot and allow the viewer to draw their own conclusion about it, leaving enough open to be intriguing but giving enough to understand the motivations.

@Maria_Erias I keep saying, there's gonna be one filmmaker with some real brass balls that just says F it all and makes the most raunchy, offensive comedy the world has ever seen, as a throwback to the golden age of offensive comedy. And it'll be a mega hit, and then other filmmakers will start to get it. People are sick of wokeness. Even if they're getting that precious China money from doing woke garbage, they can still make a lot of money the good ole fashioned way, by actually making movies people want to see.

@FairPlayGaming it's not just that they're pandering to a fringe minority, it's that they're so ham fisted with it, there's no subtlety, there's no nuance, they just smack you in the face with the opinion you're supposed to have, and you're a terrible person if you disagree. Disney probably has enough name recognition and financial backing to run on fumes for a while, but they've already been doing that, and the name recognition is taking a nosedive fast. Only a matter of time before the piggy bank starts to deplete too.

Because the creativity of American films has gone way downhill in recent years, the sensitivity of the outrage mob has made original storytelling too risky for most filmmakers to be willing to go for. That's why everything is a remake or a reboot or a generic superhero shart. And everyone is desperate for something fresh, so they cling onto anything halfway decent and blow it up to be a masterpiece.

I really liked Violent Night. I know the reviews have been kinda lukewarm, everyone seemed to like it but not that many people seemed to love it as much as I did. But it's sure as hell worth a watch, it's original but also nostalgic at the same time.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Field of Dreams, and one of the things that makes Ray such a great character is that he's just a regular guy, there's nothing special about him other than hearing the voice for some reason he can't explain. But you see his flaws throughout the entire film, he's confused and vulnerable, but he's also stoic in many ways and driven towards his goal that he has absolutely no idea why or how it even exists.

@wumpusrat and Annie was a true "strong woman" character in Field of Dreams, even though she doesn't fit the stereotype. But she was loving and supportive, her husband is listening to voices in a corn field and she's just like "cool, do that! You're totally nuts, but I'm here for it."

@slyliquid4985 and you can even still use jump scares too, it just has to be done right. I though The Conjuring: Devil Made Me Do It did a good job of that, and it's not the best movie ever, but it was pretty reserved with the jump scares, it actually made it scarier to me because it was more about the suspense, and a lot of the times you thought there was going to be a jump scare, there was nothing. It kept you guessing in that regard. The fake out, not jump scare.

Yea, it could have been pretty awesome if they kept it within the realm of telepathy power and all that shit. No need to have him be impossibly physically powerful, despite being the same body as a tiny chick, doing everything backwards. But "ridiculous" is probably the one word that describes this movie if you had to confine it to one word.

@strategery101 it's more believable than most zombie movies too, it isn't corpses reanimating and rising from the grave or some nonsense like that, they aren't even technically zombies in that sense. It's a virus. I love the first 2 movies, 28 Days Later is one of my favorite horror movies ever.

And it's dumb as hell, definitely not one of Adam Sandler's better movies, but it's hilarious if you can turn off the adult part of your brain, and the entire movie is racial stereotypes and childish sex jokes.

@thant0s the hilarious part is that's probably the most he's ever made for a movie, either that or Dr. Strange, which he was also barely in. So you really can't blame him, he busts his ass in the movies he stars in and helps behind the camera with too, for far less money, I'm sure he gets beat the fuck up doing those movies. Having a supporting role in a major budget blockbuster is probably a nice vacation for him.

There's a movie called "One Shot", starting Scott Adkins and Ryan Philippe, the entire movie is one continuous shot. Thus the name. It's pretty freaking wild, especially considering it's pretty action packed, surely everything didn't go as planned on the one shot they took, so I'm assuming they just kinda did it paintball style. Like ok these are blanks, don't shoot the main actors, and if you get shot play dead. Have fun.

I'll normally watch controversial movies like this when they come out on streaming, just to see what the fuss is about, without spending anything other than what I'm already spending on the subscription. But this movie and this actress haven't really left anything in question. I don't need to see it to know I hate it, much like I don't need to be attacked by a crocodile to know I don't like that.

And you can't take a clear side, you have to present both sides and respect the audience enough to let them form their own opinion. Even if your personal opinion of the matter is well thought out and principled, if you push it too hard it just comes across as preachy and distracts from the primary point of the movie or show.

I'm genuinely just not interested in this movie, the 1st one was an effects driven carbon copy of Dances With Wolves, the plot was predictable and hollow. Given that sequels are very rarely even as good as the 1st, this one will probably be a shit show. But with cool visuals.

100% staged, Chris Rock is 50 something, not a particularly big guy, and probably has little to no experience actually getting into a scrap, at least not any time in recent history. If he genuinely got hit without any warning like that, he woulda gone down like LeBron James every time someone is within 5 feet of him on the court.

Just doesn't make sense. All the characters you mentioned do have some kind of supernatural powers, I'm not saying any of this is believable obviously, I'm just saying it's internally consistent to their movie's cannon.

If Gabriel is that strong then the chick is too, this would have been such an easy fix too, they could have had some seemingly insignificant scene where she opens a jar of pickles or something and it explodes, and she's just kinda like oh damn, I never knew I was that strong. @crashpal Street Fighter was pretty good, Mortal Kombat was terrible. I recently rewatched it, it's entertaining just for the sake of pure 90s cheese, but the fighting is terrible, it's one of the worst choreographed action movies of it's time.

@crashpal yes that's what I'm talking about, the '95 MK movie is terrible. The Tekken movies are ok, there's actually the '09 and a sequel. Neither are great, neither are terrible, they have moments of being pretty awesome, but there's just not enough action, they go too hard on the plot and it just kinda kills the vibe.

@Roadman3D from what I understand the current CCP has imprisoned and murdered more ethnic minorities than the Nazis during WW2. Of course it's damn near impossible to really know anything concrete about it, since China is so secretive about what's really going on in their country, and there's so much propaganda coming from every angle. So you should take that into account when it comes to anything dealing with the CCP. Even most Chinese citizens don't really know what's going on in their country.

@lbds954 try some indie horror movies. It's a mixed bag, obviously, they can't all be winners. You've got to be willing to sit through a few stinkers in order to find a hidden gem. But there are plenty of hidden gems.

@justsomeguywholovesberserk6375 yea the Mario movie was great, and I will say, it seems like more of them are starting to finally get it right. But if video game adaptations became the next big thing, they would get just as watered down and boring as superhero movies are now.

@colindavidch I agree, if not completely leave it alone, at least go back to when there weren't so damn many superhero movies. If there was once every few years, and something people are really interested in, it would be fine.

@tom-u8k6y ya know, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but Boyka and the Undisputed movies actually aren't my favorite of his. They're all really good, I would put them near the top, but my favorites are Debt Collector, Accident Man, both of their sequels, Ninja 2, and Avengement.

@tom-u8k6y yea you definitely should, Debt Collector is a sort of buddy comedy with lots of ass kicking, thinking Rush Hour but more emphasis on the martial arts and less humor, but it definitely has both. Not the most action packed of his movies, but imo one of the best overall movies, him and Louis Mandylor really play off each other excellently, both comedically and with the fighting. And Accident Man is also pretty funny, but doesn't pull any punches with the action, lots of really bloody, brutal fight scenes.

@Flaschenteufel people like her don't just crave money though, they also crave attention. Sometimes even more than money. If her career dries up, she'll be the first to claim some kind of victim status, she could even turn it around and start trying to sympathize with the right, and claim the left is why she's not famous anymore.

I liked Ghostbusters: Afterlife. From a critical point of view, no, it wasn't great, but on the "did I enjoy it?" scale, yes, I did, it was a fun movie. Light years better than Ladybusters.

One of the most frustrating parts of all this is that once it's finally all over, you won't be able to find a single person who admits to buying into all the far left crap. We know they exist, otherwise the movement itself wouldn't exist, but every single one of them will lie and pretend like they always knew better.

I just watched the first movie the other day, honestly I'm not that interested in the 2nd just because the volume was so bad, without subtitles I would have had no idea what was going on. They had all the effects turned up to 11 and the dialogue completely muted.

@poiuyt975 and sometimes they were actually pretty decent movies, if you can overlook the poor production value due to budget. I would rather watch a cheesy low budget B movie than a modern major budget movie that's all flash and no substance.

I liked Looper, and the Knives Out movies. The rest of his stuff I either didn't like or didn't care enough to see. He's not the only filmmaker to stumble on a few good movies without really being that great.
