@yongbin8184 the careless, asshole exterior was a coping mechanism because he knew his ability and courage gave him a certain obligation to step into a higher role. But he also knew a lot of them were going to die. It helped him keep grounded and focused to pretend like he didn't really care about any of them on a personal level. At least that's how I always interpreted it, maybe it was reading too deep into it....
