Titanic.

Art Howe was right, Billy Beane is an idiotic hack. The only thing "inventive" about his approach as a GM is that he was hyper obsessive over analytics, to the point of completely ignoring things like speed and defense. The A's would have been better off without him, even to this day. He's driven the franchise into the ground.

@lyonsfamily9502 which is why I hated the movie, even though I can recognize that it was a good movie if you're just looking at it as a movie and not worried about the accuracy. But it was so clearly biased in trying to paint Beane as the hero, one of the big narratives that got completely overlooked was his absolute obsession with starting Hatteberg at 1B instead of Pena, just bc Hatteberg drew more walks and struck out less. The movie never mentions oh yea btw, Pena went on to become a complete powerhouse, perennial MVP candidate for the next several years after he left Oakland, was one of the premier power hitters in all of baseball. And yes, he struck out a lot, but so what? Sometimes strike outs are a fair trade off when we're talking about someone who's that productive. Beane overstepped and hurt the team by forcing Howe to reduce Pena's playing time.

Moneyball was good as a movie, but extremely annoying if you were aware of the source material, they took some pretty big leaps to portray Billy Beane as the hero, the reality really wasn't quite like that. He was hardly the first GM to bring a more analytical approach to structuring a team, his methods had been around for ages before him, he was just hyper obsessive over it arguably to the detriment of the team as a whole. He's not exactly the most well liked figure around MLB, because the Athletics are a dying franchise, there are rumors of them moving out of Oakland and rebranding almost every off-season.
