Karate really isn't that effective outside of karate. It's too restrictive as far as what techniques are "allowed", plus there really isn't any grappling. It also focuses too much on straight forward and backwards, not enough lateral movement, and it doesn't focus enough on counters, since a lot of competition is point based.

@KB-qk1ic it's still probably the most effective for self defense, in that kind of scenario, you're probably not going against a trained professional in peak condition. A novice at BJJ has a better chance against a common street thug than a novice at karate or boxing. It's easier to grab a hold of someone than to land a clean punch or kick, plus BJJ scales up better against bigger and stronger opponents.
