Rickey Henderson broke the career stolen base record, and then played for 10 more seasons. He has almost 500 more than 2nd place. I think that one is safe.

@michaelnadler596 he really was one of the best ever, it's hard to compare him to the sluggers, because it's so different, but one thing that's not debatable is that nobody was as good as Rickey at what he did. Best leadoff hitter ever.

His baseball career actually wasn't bad, he started slow, but by the end of the season he was hitting, he got called up to the majors. Not bad for not even picking up a bat all those years, if he had stuck with it, he may have been a legitimate impactful player.

@michaelnadler596 pretty wild that Elly is turning so many heads this year, because he's on pace for about 80 steals. That would be the most in a long time, and he would have to do that every year for almost 20 years to get near Rickey's record.

@michaelnadler596 he wasn't a big dude either, I think about 5'10". But he had good power too, he hit 20 plus homers a few times. He probably could have hit 30 or even 40 if he was focused on that instead of getting on base. Same with Tony Gwynn, they're both great hitters that can do what they want with the ball.

Chael Sonnen was the undefeated, undisputed champion of 5 different weight classes at the same time, never even lost a round. The "P" stands for "GOAT".

Jackie Chan has won a bunch of fights too, but that wasn't real, it was in movies.

Plus there were games where Ripken came in late in the game as a pinch hitter or defensive replacement, just to keep the streak. Gehrig actually really played all those games.

@michaelnadler596 oh damn, that's awesome. Closest I've come to being at a historic game live is when KRod broke the single season saves record.

@123-e5z4e they still don't pitch as many innings as they used to, there's a couple of work horses left, but they're a dying breed.

@123-e5z4e yea a handful of examples, up until the 90s pitching 7 or more innings was expected. Just look at the total number of complete games across the league year over year, there's been a dramatic decrease in the last decade or so.

@michaelnadler596 I always respect athletes with long careers too, that shows dedication and discipline, also some luck if we're being honest, injuries can happen to anyone. But if you work out obsessively, like Rickey and Nolan, you can reduce your chances of a serious injury a lot. A ton of former teammates have said Nolan was the first to the gym and the last to leave in the off-season, even when he was in his 40s. And I've heard Rickey ran an insane distance almost every day, as a "warm up".
