That's how it was in the old days, politicians were pro bono volunteers, they had to leave their jobs to come to the capitol to vote on bills. So they had a vested personal interest in getting that shit done fast, and getting it done right, because they were actually losing money. Eventually it was voted on that they should be compensated for their time, to give incentive for the most productive people to want to be politicians. But you can see where that went. They start staying and voting on bills as long as possible, because it's easier than plowing fields. Until they eventually just became full time politicians.

@indepthmike5578 not if you have enough money to rebuild. Gulf coast cities know how to deal with hurricanes, it's a common occurrence. Some things are going to be destroyed permanently, but not if someone has the means and interest to keep it preserved.

@Tokinjester I think that's very fair. Compensate representatives with living expenses, a very base level salary. Since they're the ones that are allocating how our taxes are spent, they should live their own lives according to how those taxes are paid.
