They were free to borrow the money that put them in debt, and they're free to get a better job. So yes, they are free, they just make bad decisions. None of those things holding them back were imposed by force by the government.

Depends on why he's in the desert. Did he just go off the grid because he's fed up with modern society? If so, he's free. He just doesn't have a lot of options as far as basic living amenities. Did he get exiled out of society for some reason? In that case, not free, he's basically a prisoner in a giant jail cell. Is it some apocalyptic scenario where most of society is gone and he's a lone survivor or something? In that case, I don't think freedom is his biggest concern. He's just trying to survive.

@chrishakala528 what if people don't want insurance? Some people would rather owe money later for something they already used than pay in advance for something they may or may not use. Not up to you to make that decision and force people to pay for a service they didn't ask for.

Leftists sure have a messed up way of viewing freedom, I don't know if there's any way to explain this so they understand, but "I should be able to do whatever I want, and someone else should be forced to pay for it" is not freedom, that's being a child.

@APaleDot not really. Some people barely need medical care at all. Some need it a lot. Some people save money so they can pay for their own medical care. It's immoral and unethical to force people to pay for something for someone else that they don't even want to buy for themselves.

That means you also have the responsibility to pay for the medical care youll inevitably need due to the 30 cheeseburgers you eat for lunch. That's how it works. Freedom and responsibility are inseparable, you cannot have one without the other. The left does not want freedom, the left wants freedom from responsibility. That's not freedom, that's a nanny state, and it never ends well. Regular people aren't trying to fight against you, we're trying to tell you that the things you think you want are bad for all of us. History is stuffed to the brim of examples of specific reasons why these ideas are bad, progressives aren't progressive at all, none of your ideas are new, every single one of them are refried old ideas that led to unspeakable death and suffering. @Bdavis2475 and how does that contradict anything I've said? You're going to have patients whether they're paying out of pocket, through private insurance, or through public insurance. The numbers may vary, but the patients will be there one way or the other. And also, you're not a doctor, leftists are broke losers that want free handouts.

Freedom doesn't mean the government giving you free stuff. There's always a catch. Freedom means you can make your own choices and live with the consequences of those choices, both good and bad. You cannot have freedom without responsibility. The left wants no responsibility whatsoever, for anything, under any circumstance.

@somuchsalt2810 not really. Freedom means making your own choices and taking responsibility for it, good and bad. You can argue for entitlements if you want to, that's your opinion, but that's not freedom. Entitlements come from somewhere, and if your argument is that someone else should be forced to give you an entitlement, that's the antithesis of freedom.

But you have the freedom to do whatever you want to earn money. Obviously not everyone can do literally any job they want to, but if there's a career you want, there are steps you can take to get that career. There isn't a law or government entity saying "you can't have this job, ever", there are just criteria you have to meet to obtain that. And that's all up to you.

@ShinyNix86 that's not freedom, that's entitlement. People who are poor and have less options were free to make the choices that lead them to being poor. That's unfortunate, but nobody forced them to make bad decisions. If you want to live in a nation that bubble wraps the world so people's bad decisions never negatively impact them, thats your opinion, you're free to have that too. But you're not on the side of freedom. That's not an opinion. That's a fact.
