If the left had taken a principled stance against censorship, regardless of who was being censored, like most people on the right have, this wouldn't be happening.

This is what happens when the left ideologically supports censorship, because they only have bad ideas that can't survive along with good ideas. And then you blame someone else when it goes wrong, like we warned you all along that it would.

That's a part of this a lot of people don't seem to understand, the algorithms used for this are just algorithms. They just look for key words or phrases. Even if the idea is to keep people from voicing opinions that are forbidden, you'll end up censoring people who are just talking about those opinions and not necessarily even voicing support for them, in some cases even actively mocking those opinions. Ideas don't just go away because you don't allow people to say it. And big tech knows this too, this isn't about censorship, or public health, it's about dividing people further.

@Udhehf Hehcuw well sure, just because YouTube is within their legal right to ban certain speech, just like your hypothetical bar, doesn't mean it's right, and we're also within our rights to say it's fucked up and we don't stand for it.

@Udhehf Hehcuw yea maybe so. Maybe I'm too idealistic but I think we just need to teach our kids how to not be dumbasses. Then we wouldn't have generations of dumbasses that think silencing people they don't agree with is a good way for society to operate. I just think social understandings can often be more powerful than government mandates, and eliminate the need to even have government mandates.

@aaronhumphrey3514 the entire leftist worldview is that everything is someone else's fault, and leftists shouldn't ever have to take responsibility for anything, and the rest of the world should just give them stuff. There's obviously a lot of conflicts there, because not everyone can just get free stuff and never have to work, because someone has to work in order for their to even be free stuff to give away. So leftists just disagree about who should have to make all the stuff for them to take. The problem is that the definition of misinformation comes down to someone's opinion, who may also be misinformed. So they could end up promoting misinformation by banning accurate information. People make mistakes, and sometimes they lie. And sometimes you can't tell the difference between a mistake and a lie.

@Udhehf Hehcuw that being said, with the alarming amount of people in support of online censorship, it seems to be only a matter of time before it's written into law, and people really are fined or even jailed for speech. That's how these things work, they government didn't just up and ban discrimination one day because they're cool dudes like that, that was in response to growing public support of fairness and anti discrimination during the civil rights era. These are dangerous times, it's just private companies now, but with as much power as they have in lock step with the government, it's only a matter of time.

@Tyler Holt that's not true at all. I haven't heard anyone of any significance say that antifa and BLM shouldn't have free speech online. Maybe some looney tunes, and people often point out the hypocrisy that people are banned just for voicing support for Trump, while BLM people have actively organized terrorist attacks online and not had anything done to them whatsoever. But the vast majority of regular people support free speech even for the far left terrorists. It's only leftists that want free speech for them and tyranny for everyone else. You're just completely incorrect. And accidentally proving that you're a cult member that refuses to even listen to people outside of your cult.

@edo2514 if they're committing terrorist attacks then it's not authoritarian to arrest them. Even if they're present at a terrorist attack and not directly engaged, they can still be detained and given a trial to see their level of involvement. That's not authoritarianism, it's the law. And I never agreed with or condoned any violent force against them, that's you putting words in my mouth because you're dishonest. Not everyone is a violent psychopath like leftists, some of believe in the rule of law being evenly applied even to the most repugnant of criminals.
