@nickelpickel3924 to put it as simply as possible, left tends to favor more government intervention, and right tends to favor less. So someone barely right of center would be likely to say "I think taxes should be lower, and there should be less regulations on business, but some taxes and regulations are fine", and someone barely left of center would say the same except want more regulations and higher taxes. So someone further right would want little to no taxes or regulations, someone further to the left would want very high taxes and a heavily regulated economy. And this is just the economic scale, which is the main flaw in the left/right spectrum, but social issues do tend to go hand in hand with economic views, which is why right leaning people tend to have a "you do you, just don't expect me to pay for you to do it" attitude towards social issues, and left leaning people tend to think more along the lines of "let me do what I want and pay for it if I don't feel like paying for it".
