@brucehitchcock3869 yea people seem to think of it as a better, more honest time for media, but really it was just a lot easier for the limited number of media outlets to all get on the same page with their lies.

@brothersandsistersofvalhalla but being a libertarian and social democrat is a direct contradiction, since social democrats believe in heavy progressive taxes, forcing people by law to give away differing amounts of their own money is by definition not libertarian. There's absolutely no way around this. And you can hold either of those positions, I really don't give a shit, but calling yourself a libertarian social democrat is like calling yourself a meat eating vegetarian. You can't be both.

@brothersandsistersofvalhalla true, so you could say something like "I believe in a lot of libertarian ideals", or "I agree with some social democratic policies", but that's not what Kyle does, he says "I am a social democrat", and then turns around and calls himself a libertarian too. I already explained how those things are directly contradictory, everyone believes in some libertarian ideals, since it's a pretty broad range of liberties, but to call yourself a libertarian implies that you lean towards liberty on most things. To call yourself a social democrat implies that you're pretty far on the other end of the spectrum on taxes, which is a very key thing about libertarianism. It's not like saying "I like scary movies, but nothing with demons", it's more like saying "I like scary movies, but nothing with anything scary in it".

@trollforlife there's also a third option, that workers can own the means of production. Which is basically what capitalism is. Doesn't mean everyone can just because they want to, but if you meet all of the required criteria, you can most certainly own the means of your production. There's just no arm of the government enforcing this. And if you want to start a business and give the workers part ownership of the company, you're also free to do that.

@patchwurk6652 it's not infinitely nebulous though, it does have some confines. It's definitely complicated, just saying anyone can do anything they want isn't liberty, because then whoever has the most guns and influence could simply rule by force. That's not very free for everyone else. So not everyone is going to agree on what the optimal level of freedom really means, but taxing the shit out of people just because they have more money is certainly not liberty. Nobody can hold that position and also be reasonable and honest about it.

@brothersandsistersofvalhalla oh wow, are you being serious? There's a ton of hilarious video compilations on YT breaking down everything Oliver is wrong about. He's probably wrong more often than he's right, even if you count things like "I'm John Oliver" as him being right. It's actually kind of amazing how someone can be wrong so often and still have a TV show.

@WL1264 I watch a lot of left wing content, partly because I want to know what the other side is saying, and partly because the lunatics in the comments are hilarious to fuck with. But it's hard to find leftist content creators that are actually honest. Destiny is probably the best one IMO, and Jimmy Dore is halfway honest. He's honest about social issues and railing against the political establishment. But when he gets into any of his pet policies like M4A, he's extremely dishonest. So I would recommend him but take him with a grain of salt, he doesn't have a problem manipulating the truth for certain means. He's still a hell of a lot more honest than Kulinski, or Pakman, or Seder, or Vaush though.

@WL1264 no he's dishonest, I don't think he's a stupid guy at all, I think Kyle is very intelligent, Pakman too. Pakman is probably a little more intelligent, but neither of them are stupid. They know they're lying. They're convinced that their ideology is morally righteous, so they think they're justified in using any method available to get as many people on board as possible. Somehow they've missed the part where if they have to lie about it, it's probably not morally righteous. But that's the justification of pretty much all progressives. They think they just know better than all of us dummies, and we would be better off if we just bent the knee to them and lived according to their demands.

If we were to get into the weeds of our politics, I'm sure you would disagree with me on most things, but I would present my views honestly, you would not. I don't want or deserve anything from people who have more than me, and neither do you, and I also don't owe anyone anything because they have less than me, and neither do you. And I'm not even trying to argue to convince you otherwise, I understand there are different views on that, but you don't get to say that you want to make people spend their money a certain way because of liberty. That's complete nonsense, that's the opposite of liberty. Liberty is saying you can earn any amount of money you want, and you can spend that money on what you want, usually within certain limitations, reasonable people accept that there are limitations on everything. You're saying you want more limitations and more government intervention, that's fine of you believe that, but you don't get to believe that and then say you value liberty more than most people, because you don't, you value it less, you value equality more than liberty. I'm only asking you to be honest about where you stand.

@patchwurk6652 I'm somewhere between conservative and libertarian, I don't want to abolish all taxes but I think our current tax system is a complete shit show, I would favor an extremely low, flat tax, and I have a much more lenient view of criminal justice than traditional conservatives, I don't think people should go to prison for non violent crimes. I'm just pointing out the holes and nonsensical thinking of leftists when it comes to liberty, you're all half libertarians, you believe in absolute freedom for yourself but tyranny for everyone who disagrees with you. It's not libertarian if you wouldn't extend the same rights you want for yourself to everyone else.

The left targets people with this kind of arrogant mindset, they're easily manipulated because the idea of admitting that they were wrong about something terrifies them more than even any kind of physical threat. Once you get them to believe one lie, there's no limit to the amount of nonsense you can make them blindly subscribe to, since acknowledging that any of it is untrue would require them to go all the way back to the beginning and admit their entire worldview is untrue.
