Publishers can publish whatever they want, but they can be held accountable in defamation lawsuits, since they have oversight. Platforms are just places where people are allowed to speak freely. Social media companies need to pick a lane, their special protections from lawsuits need to be revoked if they choose to engage in censorship.

@Julian-jd5yj YouTube counts as social media. I agree with you in the general sense, but let's not act like you're above it all. This is the only social media I use other than Snapchat just to get naughty pics of my girlfriend when she's out of town. But I'm not above it all.

@AlexA-ko8lu probably not, if they choose to censor people and don't have those special protections, that means if you call me a poopie head on Twitter, I can sue them for allowing you to call me that, when I in fact do not have poop on my head. You see how much of a legal nightmare that would be for them? It would go in the opposite direction, it would become a platform where anyone can say anything.

@AlexA-ko8lu I'm being a little facetious, because I'm pretty sure the poopie head suit wouldn't pass the laugh test, but you get the point, in more high profile cases of defamation, Twitter could be on the hook along with whoever posted the comment. They don't want that. If they stop censoring and declare themselves as a platform, they wouldn't be liable for anything private users say. Like it is now. They just also get to censor whatever they want.

@AlexA-ko8lu either that or they would have some vetting process for who's allowed to use their media, the same as a traditional magazine or newspaper would. Which would kill a lot of the fun of social media and nobody would even want to use it.

@AlexA-ko8lu right, and nobody would care about a version of Twitter where only pre-approved people are allowed to join the conversation, that would be a terrible business model. And they're sure as hell not going to open themselves up to lawsuits. So they would take the other option, and just allow free speech on their platforms. And every leftist will lose their mind and have to be institutionalized, because leftists don't have the intellectual or emotional maturity to handle seeing differing opinions on that scale.
