The notion of punching down only exists if you believe some people are inherently less valuable than others. I reject the premise.

@AegixDrakan nah, I reject the entire premise. You can think what you want, but I don't think anyone should be immune to criticism, and I don't think anyone is above or below anyone else based on any inherent trait.

@SplyntProd and seems to me he's mostly made fun of feminists, and feminism. Given I haven't seen all of his shows, but I've seen several, I think he's really funny. I think he's lost his mind since he started getting more political, but making fun of feminism is not the same as making fun of women.

@gabrielmccray3457 I'm not saying anyone shouldn't be criticized, I'm saying the opposite. I'm saying anyone can be criticized, and it doesn't matter who it's coming from. Bill Burr is more "powerful" than a lot of people too, that doesn't mean he can't criticize lesser known comedians or anything like that. Who decides the hierarchy of power anyway?

@chickensalad7199 but it is about value, why can a person that's poor and has no political power not take criticism? I guess I would agree that in comedy it's usually not that funny, because nobody really knows who you're making fun of. But as far as morally, or ethically, I don't think the social status of the person criticizing, or being criticized is relevant.

@SplyntProd there's a difference between whether something is funny, and whether it's immoral though. You can't really be ignoring that. And I also never said it's NEVER funny, it's just typically not funny when you're making fun of someone nobody has heard of. It depends on the context, you could be making fun of a type of person everyone has met, not a specific person. All I was saying is that it's usually funnier if it's someone people know. And again, unfunny and immoral are not the same thing.

@SplyntProd have you heard his bit about how you won't ever find a feminist on a sinking boat, or a burning building? Hilarious, but doesn't sound very lefty to me. He's definitely changed since he got married.

isaiahromero9861 I mean, I'm not saying never either, like I said, I haven't seen all of his stuff, and it's been a while since I've seen any of it. So maybe I'm wrong. But I just remember him ripping on feminists, and it was hilarious.

@chickensalad7199 right, and if you're ripping on someone that everyone knows, it's more likely to get more laughs. Personally, I think some of the best jokes are the ones that not everyone gets, if it flies over about 30% of people's heads, then it can often be extra funny for the 70% who do get it. But that's just my opinion. Also, we aren't talking about whether it's funny or not, usually, when people talk about the concept of punching up. They're talking about it being immoral, or unethical, or at the very least offensive. You can be offended if you want, but I don't care, offense doesn't mean anything to me most of the time. Usually the people saying they're offended are the ones who want to have power over you.

@billweir1745 you don't think the Puerto Rican government has power? Because that's who you're making fun of when you make jokes about an entire country being in disarray. Nobody thinks it's the people's fault, other than voting in or allowing that government to exist in the first place, but as we've seen through history, that's often outside of the common person's power. If you believe in the concept up punching up, making fun of a corrupt government is definitely punching up.

@machinesworking I reject the concept of morality being linked to the power, or lack of power of the person making a comment. I think wrong is wrong, I think rich people can say things that are morally wrong, I think poor people can too. I think rich people can say things that are correct and insightful, and I think poor people can do. I value the content more than I value the source.

@Iggy1977 he said himself that he just turns on the TV and believes whatever they tell him. Does that sound like a well informed political person to you? He said it in jest, he's a comedian after all. But I don't think he was making it up.

@SplyntProd well he was speaking specifically about the pandemic, and other political issues, if I recall the conversation. And yes, I absolutely do think he does that, I think most Democrat voters believe what they hear on the news, as long as it's their news networks. I think that's the primary difference between Democrat and Republican voters, I think Republicans believe what makes sense with the world, and Democrats believe what makes them feel good.

@SplyntProd well isn't that the entire point of the concept of "punching down"? People making a moral judgement and saying you shouldn't do it? They aren't usually saying you shouldn't do it because it's not funny, they're saying they think it's wrong. Don't be obtuse, you know this. And yea he's definitely a lefty now, or at least says the right talking points. I never denied that, I said that he changed. He wasn't like this before.
