What's really bizarre to think about is how unique our experience is, that we may be the first people to be fully aware that we're living in the collapse of our own civilization. An average roman living in the last few decades of their peak probably didn't think "this is the best Rome that's ever been!" because it was just their life, they didn't have a lot to compare it to. But with the internet, and better records of international affairs and history, we're fully aware of what's happening around us and where it's happened before in history. Not all of us, obviously. The people who are causing the collapse have no idea.
