True, it usually doesn't hurt unless there's at least some truth to it. Although I would add that with reasonable people, it's usually something that has a little truth but is still intentionally inaccurate, leaving out context. With leftists, offense comes from the pure truth.

Stereotypes don't just materialize out of thin air, because someone felt like it. But one that I've always thought was kind of dumb is black people and fried chicken. Everyone likes fried chicken. That would be like saying all white people like pizza. Ok, sure, but so do Mexican people, and black people, and midgets, and probably even gypsies. I've just never gotten close enough to a gypsy to ask.

That's like how white leftists are the one group in the US that actually has an out group preference, meaning they like non white people more than they like white people. If you recognize that your people are arrogant, or if you think that your people suck, you could always try..... Maybe not sucking so much.
