The main difference between a religion and a cult is that a religious person can honestly ask themselves if they're in a cult.

@cornbreadisbetterthanpizza6866 I would say it's more like Ian is 50% right 50% of the time. Even the stupid shit he says usually comes from a place where he almost gets it, but something about that hippie part of his brain leads him to draw the wrong conclusion from the right observation.

I like Joe Rogan's definition - if one guy says he can talk to God, that's a crazy person. If 100 people agree with him, it's a cult. If a million people agree with him, it's a religion.

@gottesurteil3201 but they were still men. They could have mistaken what Jesus said, or they could have even been corrupt and added in things for their own personal interest. I'm not a Christian, I'm an atheist, but even internally within Christian beliefs, Christ is the only son of God, his authority supersedes all. That's one part that's never made sense to me, the Bible was written by men. That doesn't mean you should just ignore it, it doesn't mean there's not valuable knowledge and insights, I even respect a lot of what's told in the Bible, as an atheist, it's a great work that holds a lot of relevance even to modern day. But it shouldn't be taken as the infallible word of God, by definition men are not God, they are not infallible, even if they were genuinely inspired by the word of God himself, it was still physically penned by fallible men.

@Argent Wolf yea I hear that. My assessment was really more of a "street" definition than an academic definition. I've always felt like there's a lot of grey area between cult and religion.

@Argent Wolf they're freaking everywhere. It's probably just one crypto shill with a bunch of burner accounts. It's weird as hell though, it pops up and within 5 minutes there's 18 or 25 replies, yes, 18 or 25, exactly, unless an actual person replies, the number may be different.

@Galahad_Du_Lac considering no living person knows with any certainty whether or not Christianity is correct, both views are equally valid.

@Galahad_Du_Lac you don't know that though, you believe that. And that's fine, I don't have a problem with faith, we all believe a few things that we can't prove, that's normal. But you should understand the difference. If anyone had absolute proof of God, they would be the most famous person in the world and we wouldn't even be having these discussions anymore.

@Galahad_Du_Lac love is an example I use as a comparison, love isn't tangible or quantifiable, you can't prove that you love your family, but I'm sure you do, and you don't have to prove it. You just feel it, you believe it on faith. And I do too. I just don't have the same faith in God or religion.

@gottesurteil3201 well that's up to you, you're the Christian. I think it's just a book written by some of the best thinkers of that era, who made some very profound observations about human nature. I don't have to believe all, or any of it, I take it on a case by case basis, and also find it very interesting to read the insights of people trying to understand a world that's so different than our modern world.

@Alfred5555 eh, I wouldn't say "all of it", there's some pretty awful stuff in the Bible about slavery and shit like that. And I'm not trying to be some edgy boy and condemn the whole thing, I understand it was a different era with different societal norms, I'm not trying to single the Bible out as opposed to any other text or ideology from that time. But in general, yes, I do agree with Christian moral framework.

@Alfred5555 atheist just means "without theism". That's all. It's not an affirmative claim of anything, it's a lack of an affirmative claim. Saying "I do not believe" doesn't mean that I believe in something else instead. It just means I don't believe.

@Argent Wolf I've noticed the same thing, and I can see where they're coming from too, the left is creepy as fuck and actively destroying society, I fully understand how someone would think a "return to tradition" is the solution to that, I even agree with that to an extent. I just don't think becoming a weirdo evangelical is a necessary part of that.

@Galahad_Du_Lac it's really not self evident though. There is absolutely zero definitive proof of God. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence. But not a single one of these things is necessarily proof of God. There's a lot about the universe we don't understand. Maybe it's god, maybe it's something else, if you want to believe it's god, that's fine, I'm not going to argue with you over what you want to believe. But when you say you know something that you don't know, I am going to point out that you're incorrect.

@gottesurteil3201 if you don't believe that way, then sure, it's inconsequential to you. But to YECs, this denial of reality impacts their worldview on all other things. You can believe in God and Christ and still say "well ok, I guess they were wrong about the whole 7 day invention thing, since we have physical evidence that shows otherwise."

@Alfred5555 it's been a while, I used to be a Christian though, I got saved when I was 14 and attended church regularly until I was about 18, I was actually really involved in the church, I was there at least 2 days a week and did a lot of extra curricular stuff with the youth group too. So I'm certainly not unaware of all of it. I stopped going to church around 18 but still considered myself a Christian until around my mid to late 20s. Like I've said, I still agree with the general moral framework of Christianity, I just don't think any one religion has it all figured out, I don't think I have it all figured out either. That's why I'm an atheist, I decided around my late 20s to just let go and be ok with saying "I don't know" to things I don't know.
