@Kalyx it's not as simple as just "not infringing on other people's rights", because we're often left with a choice where we have to infringe on either one person's rights or another's. That's why laws exist. You could say arresting someone for shoplifting is infringing on their right to shoplift, but them shoplifting is also infringing on the store owner's right to legally sell products. Most laws are a balancing act where we have to decide who's freedoms are more valuable.

@original0blace eh, the "people will do it anyway" argument really doesn't hold any water. People still get murdered, that isn't a justification to make it legal.

@trequor yea you're kind of accidentally agreeing with me here. In a state where everyone had absolute rights to do whatever they want, you could just take something if you wanted it, even if it belongs to someone else. That's why we limit individual rights. The "most free" society isn't as simple as just turning the freedom dial up to 10. It's somewhere in between, where we balance the rights of the individual with the rights of the collective.

@trequor but a lot of circumstances require one person or another having their rights infringed on. That's my entire point. It's more complicated than just saying gimme all the freedom. There have to be limits somewhere.
