Would you rather 1 innocent man be convicted or 10 guilty men walk free? That's an interesting thought experiment about criminal justice, and you can change those numbers around too. I don't think there's really a right answer, and it's really damn hard to find that balance. But personally I lean more towards letting guilty people walk free than convicting the innocent.

@OutOfNamesToChoose yea it can be difficult to tell the difference between corruption and an honest mistake sometimes.

@nate7778 doesn't matter, it's not about what they're guilty of, it's about whether or not they're guilty in the first place. And if you have a system that's quick to convict, you're not going to have many guilty people walking free. But you're also going to have a lot of wrongfully convicted. And if you have a system where it's difficult to convict, you're going to have a lot of guilty people walking free, but not very many wrongfully convicted. This is of course over simplifying because we're not taking corruption and just poor judgement into account. But the point is sometimes you have to pick one. You can't take human error and corruption completely out of the picture. So you're going to have both guilty people walking free and innocent people convicted no matter what, you can never reduce either number to zero, but you can control your focus in one direction or the other.

@kovenmaitreya7184 same. A free society is going to be dangerous in some ways, you do have more responsibility to protect yourself and take care of yourself and the people you care about. But that's a trade off I'm willing to make for freedom. And if that's carried out properly, then in time a lot of those dangers will start to fix themselves too. People are always going to be shitheads sometimes, you can't change that, but a free society is a respectful society, and fewer people would tend to victimize each other because there would be a stronger sense of community. And we would also help each other out more. If you ask me the wheels started getting loose on the America experiment when we started relying on the government too heavily. We don't need them to take care of us and protect us in most normal circumstances. We can take care of ourselves and each other just fine.
