From my understanding, muskets were just the cheapest and easiest guns to mass produce back in the old days, that's why they were so common and became so iconic, they were basically the "standard issue" gun for military service. But semi automatic and automatic arms go back far beyond a lot of people realize, there were even automatic crossbows in ancient Rome and China.
