I remember looking at such chips under the microscope in those days and seeing whole cities - factories, apartment buildings, suburbs and little strip malls and highways connecting everything..... Since I grew up in the SF Bay area, it wasn't uncommon to be picked up hitchiking by some Silicon Valley entrepreneur commuting from their valley fab to their home in Santa Rosa - some of those guys carried a dish with a slice of ic covered silicon, ready to show off their latest lithography....it was quite common before everything moved offshore... Those of us that grew up in that environment were extremely lucky, IMHO.
