Good point - I think you're right - maybe that's why I've been playing less these days.... I'm just a little older than you (70), and playing and listening to music has helped me get through the most difficult times in my life. So why have I played less lately? Is it because it's so easy to pick up a smartphone? Maybe so.... This needs to be thought about more.... Keep up your playing please! Cheers...

It's interesting to consider YouTube videos as a historical record - will all this fascinating anecdotal information still be available in 100 years? That's a great reason to do so....and interviews always help me to understand people better among other things.... Imagine if we had such glimpses of the 1700s, or ancient Egypt? But as far as the past goes, yes it's sad when an era ends I know very well how it goes when a lifetime devotion is over, but those days are gone. ...about all you can do is gracefully say goodbye and wish the next generation " break a leg!" 😊

Reminds me of that early YT bideo series called "Yacht Rock". For those beloved musicians, it was a humorous tribute. Nice to get a glimpse of some of reality of Michael and others - thank you kindly to both of you for taking the time....cheers.

Good for you guys - Get those studios happening!

That's telling them, Rick! ;*[} Seriously, we've never in history had the ability to explore the world of music like we do now, yet here we are... sad. I'm a typical example of the trend....

It is very interesting stuff, thank you. I'm about your age, so I got to hear very long songs too!!!

Probably could record what she remembers of the tune and hand it to an AI (a music ID algorithm) Wouldn't it be ironic, don't you think? 😅
1
So sad....do you post any of your music?

@twangbarfly I'm a musician, but I don't play enough anymore....need to get back in the woodshed....what do you do when you're depressed & not playing enough?

Gosh, 1979....I still lived on Ashbury street in SF back then! But where doesn't matter - in your 20s everything's epic! And those tunes are written in our DNA.... Thank you kindly for teaching us even greater appreciation Rick...cheers.

Wow, that one song sounded like the Dixie Chicks! I don't hear that it's AI either (but I'm listening on a phone). Usually it's timing that tips me off....wow, makes me sad. And when it gets to the point that it produces chills (ASMR), we're screwed!

Sure, start a YT channel, but please keep creating music & film.....

Yup - quantization is very tempting, but you can vary the amount and add swing, etc ....but samples end up being similar. The question is does the music still breathe? But you called it - the digital tools led to homogenization. And people like me, who's a piss poor musician, felt like we could really play! (LOL - I love how you AIed your own voice - I gotta try that....then I'll run it through Auto tune. 😊I think the solution is to play more live shows.... Or, you can do like Imogen Heap, and create your own instruments....,.and YES! Put on your headphones, close your eyes, and attend.....so true.

",,,,compared to Bach, we all suck". LOL Actually, when I heard Bach as a kid I realized I'd probably never be a classical musician.... I started waaay too late.

You got that right
1
Yeah, that's what I need to do too....

Yes....musical genius is still poorly understood by neurologists, etc....

It's sad that there's still that 31/2 minute time limitation. You can create any length of song you want, but the market still wants a song length based on the old 78 record envelope!

"Anyone can have a #1 country song, even I had a hit country song!" LOL Producer driven songs, wow. The Beatles and their engineers also advanced multitrack recording didn't they?

I've heard people with "perfect pitch" experience this even worse - apparently for them eve slightly out of tune instruments can be almost painful. I guess I'm about average, so when you hit those chords with a bad string tuning, ouch!! But I suppose with auto tune we've been conditioned for singers being in tune all the time. IMHO they use it a little too much - some blues notes give music some depth and color.... right? Now the question "what is wrong with everyone?" is an entirely different issue that could be a YouTube channel in and of itself.........
