@matthewspry4217 Self-interest is a factor e.g. "level playing field" for who? German interest? Countries like Australia, Canada, the US, China, and Russia are not energy poor. Germany was imposing pro-Russian natural gas via EU proxy at the expense of coal was stupid. UK's Lithium mines are a reasonable alternative when there is a German-led (via EU proxy) push for wreaking other countries' coal. Australia's free trade deal with the EU has reached an impasse due to the EU's "climate change" definition and market access for Australian agricultural products in the EU. Australia is inching closer to walking away from negotiations with the EU as talks on a free trade agreement reach an impasse. Australia currently has a trade deficit with Europe of more than $26.68 billion USD annually. ----------------- Australia is already at Net Zero. Australian forests absorb 940 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum compared to our domestic and industrial emissions of 417 million tonnes. Add to that the absorption of carbon dioxide in continental Australia to the carbon dioxide adsorption of 2,500,000 square kilometers of continental shelf waters and Australia sequesters some five times as much carbon dioxide as it emits. Australia does more than its share of the heavy lifting for the global sequestration of carbon dioxide. Since Australia has a small population for a given land mass, Australia sequesters some five times as much carbon dioxide as it emits. EU's demand for "climate change" action on Australia is a joke.

@willdeit6057 The problem with biodiesel or biofuels is their competition against human food sources. US Navy's research has developed a technique that generates jet fuel from the ocean via nuclear power. US Navy's aircraft carrier has nuclear power. Germany has an anti-nuclear position. LOL

@matthewspry4217 > the government got automakers to invest heavily in diesel technology The German autos were pushing clean diesel technology and it was the EU's member state's self-interest to push it. German's clean diesel PR was competing against Japan's petrol-electric hybrid technology. Due to the US CARB states, the US went full electric direction with Tesla leading the change and large-scale EV charging infrastructure construction. Tesla-Panasonic has an early start in establishing long-led lithium supply contacts in multiple countries, hence the production EV advantage when compared to the competition. Using large-scale state intervention, China Inc tried to catch up against Tesla. China, the US, Canada, Australia, and Chile have lithium supply advantages. Canada, Australia, and Chile are with Japan in the CPTPP.

@TheWizardOfTheFens Who benefits from the LPG push? Pro-gas, and anti-coal benefits a certain country from the east. Pushing a product XYZ will lead to higher demand for product XYZ which then lead to a price increase. Don't lose energy source diversity.

VW's Clean Diesel marketing is a con job and EU member governments followed it.

@markymark560 VW's Diesel Gate say hi. US EPA wreaked VW's narrative.

@marclang7431 For comparison with other vehicles, "73 MPG" is meaningless without a standardized test.

@keegan773 It's better than zero effort.

@marclang7431 That's near to NEDC's official numbers i.e. 116d 1.5's 62.8–78.5 mpg. Toyota Prius (2016 - 2022)'s official MPG (NEDC) is 78.5–83.1 mpg. Note that I'm aware of honestjohn.

@marclang7431 Both seed oil farms compete against human food farms for fertile land resources. Biofuel adds extra demand for existing farming production. The UK is not self-sufficient in food production. The United Kingdom consumed 57.3 million metric tons of oil in 2021. All UK crops used as biofuels 2019: 722,000 tonnes at 0.3% arable area. 2020: 605,000 tonnes at 0.6% arable area. To cover 57.3 million tons of consumption, 24% to 56% of the UK's arable area needs to be allocated toward biofuel production. It would need nuclear power to produce bio-crude oil from the ocean technology to reduce the extra demand on arable farm areas. Australia has the tech to produce bio-crude oil from bio-plant waste and it's currently producing bio-jet fuel. The UK does not have its empire to cover the gap.

@chrissmith7669 It wasn't a hit job. Volkswagen fully acknowledged that they had manipulated the vehicle emission tests only after being confronted with evidence regarding the "defeat device".

@marclang7431 Energy intensive is not a major issue with nuclear power or countries with large land areas. There is a strategic value in developing energy self-sufficiency. Anti-nuclear power is stupid e.g. Germany. Pro-Russian gas and oil were stupid e.g. Germany. Anti-black coal is stupid e.g. Germany. At least the UK is developing Lithium mines along with North Sea oil/gas, nuclear power, and renewables. Do everything is best for energy self-sufficiency goals. Fracking and EVs enabled the US to largely stay out of the Middle East which angered Macron. From 20181223/french-president-says-an-ally-must-be-reliable-after-us-syria-pullout-announcement Macron says 'an ally must be reliable' after US Syria pullout announcement. Macron's anger against Trump's US Syria pullout reveals the real background pusher against Syria e.g. EU.

@matthewspry4217 It's powered by "BOSCH Clean Diesel Power". Honda's clean diesel advert has "BOSCH Clean Diesel Power".

@matthewspry4217 For the 2009 green car competition, it was Toyota's hybrid vs VW's clean diesel. The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Diesel Sedan was awarded Green Car of the Year. The award was rescinded in early October 2015.

@matthewspry4217 Role in emission cheating software. In 2006, Volkswagen executives asked Bosch for help in developing software for their emission defeat devices. Volkswagen is one of Bosch's biggest customers. Volkswagen engineers provided detailed specifications to Bosch, which wrote the necessary code. Bosch was apparently concerned about the legality of the software and asked Volkswagen to assume responsibility if the fraud was discovered, but Volkswagen refused. Starting in 2008, Bosch supplied approximately 17 million motor control and mixture control devices containing illegal software to various manufacturers both domestically and globally. With such software, the automobiles fitted with Bosch's devices emitted more nitrogen oxides than allowed under regulations. On 1 February 2017, Bosch agreed to pay consumers in the United States $327.5 million as compensation for its role in devising the software. Bosch also provided emissions software for Fiat Chrysler's 3.0 L V6 diesel engine used in 100,000 model year 2014–2016 Grand Cherokee SUVs and Ram Trucks and agreed to pay affected consumers $27.5 million as part of a broader settlement in January 2019. In May 2019, Bosch paid another $100 million fine for its connection to the Dieselgate scandal.
