@robertbohn5536 The Attack class submarine is 45% higher (4,500 tons ) surface displacement when compared to the Collins Class submarine's 3,100 tons surface displacement. Australia doesn't have R&D to scale the Collins Class submarines into a larger form since Australia has used American technical skills to fix Sweden's scaled design problems. From smh.com.au/politics/federal/australia-to-build-its-own-missiles-with-1bn-guided-weapons-facility-20210330-p57fdm.html Australia to build its own missiles with $1bn guided weapons facility. Australia is a major rare earth and mineral power and it should use it.

Collins-class has support for submarine launch Tomahawks via its six torpedo tubes. Trafalgar class has five torpedo tubes. The Attack class has eight torpedo tubes.

@tonyvu2011 Li-ion battery + water = boom. Attack class submarine's battery contractor. https://pmbdefence.com.au/services/research-and-development/ Has Lead-acid, Nickel-Zinc, and Lithium-ion solutions.

Virginia class submarine Block 1 - IV has 12 VLS (vertical launch tube system) and Block V has 36 VLS in addition to the four torpedo tubes. The Attack-class submarine has 8 torpedo tubes in a similar configuration to the Seawolf-class submarine. The Seawolf-class submarine has been superseded by the Virginia class submarine. US's ultimate defence platform is the Ohio class SSGN/SSBN and incoming Columbia class SSBN.

The Americans fixed the hydrodynamic acoustic noise with the Collins class design. Swedes couldn't properly design a low acoustic noise large-scale submarine.

@robertbohn5536 Against CCP, the solution is UK's Vanguard class or Dreadnought-class submarines.

@robertbohn5536 SSBN or SSGN or SSG e.g. Israel's Dolphin-class with 10 torpedo tubes and submarine-launched nuclear cruise missiles. Atm, Australia lacks counter-strike capability and military spending is geared towards pure defense. The best defense is a good offense.

@robertbohn5536 Both Collins class and Astute-class submarines have six torpedo tubes. Virginia class submarine Block 1 - IV has 12 VLS and Block V has 36 VLS in addition to the four torpedo tubes. The Attack-class submarine has 8 torpedo tubes in a similar configuration to the Seawolf-class submarine. The Seawolf-class submarine has been superseded by the Virginia class submarine.

@robertbohn5536 FYI, Australia has the technology transfer to build additional Collins-class submarines. Collins-class submarines can be modified to use newer battery technology such as Li-ion or Nickel-Zinc.

@mike-hunt3527 German Type 212 is not design for Australia's long-range requirements.

@bigazza7829 >A Diesel / Batt sub can still travel the same distance a Nuclear Sub can SSK has a higher transit noise when compared to SSN. Reducing the enemy's situational awareness is important.
1
@bigazza7829 >A Diesel Batt sub running on battery only is way more stealthy then a Nuclear Sub , one of our Collins class subs sunk an American aircraft carrier in a war game and even the Americans said our Collins class could match an American nuclear sub That "American nuclear sub" was an old Los Angeles class submarine NOT the Virginia class submarine. Try again. Americans have fixed Collins-class's hydrodynamic acoustic noise issue. Virginia class submarine can shut down its cooling pumps and use passive liquid flow as it travels to cool the reactor.

@bigazza7829 >didn't America attack first with Vietnam , Iran , Iraq or am I mistaken Iraq attacked Kuwait which marked Saddam's removal. North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam, just as North Korea attacked South Korea.

@mike-hunt3527 RAN wanted a larger scale SSK/lite SSG with a 4500-ton displacement range when compared to German Type 212. German proposed an enlarged Type 214 concept, but German hasn't built a submarine with a 4500-ton displacement range. RAN doesn't want a repeat of Collins-class's hydrodynamic acoustic noise issue when it was scale from Västergötland class. Americans have fixed Collins-class's hydrodynamic acoustic noise issue.

@bigazza7829 >if America is a " superpower " what does it need it's Allies ?? Australia is a major supplier of titanium, lithium, and rare earth metals for the US.
1
@robertbohn5536 >I am not even sure that Australia needs a long leg strike capability to Southeast Asia......let’s continue that as a discussion. RAAF's F-111C with Israeli Popeye strike missiles was a long-leg strike capability to Southeast Asia. This capability hasn't been replaced.

@bigazza7829 Nuclear submarines also improves.

@JasonRyanWilson UK, France, and Israel doesn't trust the US nuclear defence umbrella.

@pwillis1589 Counties can withdraw from treaties. Ukraine has threaten to restore its nuclear weapons capability since the parties involved with the agreement didn't enforce Ukraine's territorial integrity.

@rumpelstiltskin6252 The Collins class has continuous improvement program e.g. read https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/collins/
