Tell that to China and Russia.

@cliffa2901 During the G20 2014 meeting in Australia, the Collins Class is unable to perform fast silent interception and silent escort roles since Australia enlisted a US nuclear attack submarine when it monitored a small Russian fleet located outside Australia's northeast waters. Collins Class's silent run has about 890 km range at 4 knots. Japanese AIP subs can do 6.5 knots with an 11,000 km range. Japanese AIP tech is licensed from Sweden. Cargo ships have a higher speed e.g. 20 knots. At higher speeds, Collins Class is not silent with submerged diesel run. Europe's non-nuclear powered submarines that defend smaller European countries' smaller coastlines shouldn't be used for Australia's 35,000 km coastline defense i.e. Australia is not France nor Sweden. Paul Keating's defense mindset is in Ireland or Sweden instead of East Asian and Australia's large coastline. Paul Keating is wrong.

False. Eight SSGNs with missile-guided frigate roles.

Australia has 34,000 Km of coastline to defend. No AIP solution can deliver silent 34,000 Km with 20 knots. Australia is not a tiny Sweden or tiny Ireland.

@5555-r9i It's a basic requirement for Australia's coastal size. Collins class's baseline design is for Sweden's tiny coastline. The reason why I picked cited Sweden and Ireland is Paul Keating.

Colins class's silent range is 890 km at about 4 knots. Sōryū-class submarine's AIP (based on Sweden's Stirling engine tech) silent range is about 11,300 km at 6.5 knots. About 20 knots is required for shadow escort for allied shipping protection missions.

It wouldn't matter since SSGN has a very long quiet range with reasonable intercept speed.

UK's "AUKUS class" design has been selected.

Australia is obtaining a British-designed AUKUS class. Certain Republicans are against AUKUS.
