  1. Against the Ottoman Empire's Barbary Pirates' slave trade, the United States Department of the Navy (DON) was established by an Act of Congress on 30 April 1798. Barbary Pirates executed raids on Europe and captured Europeans, who were turned into slaves. In 1815, the Danish and British fleets joined the US fleet in declaring war on the Ottoman Empire's Algiers Pirates and forced its leadership to release more than 1,000 European slaves. The Barbary States, although they did not capture any more U.S. ships, began to resume piracy in the Mediterranean, and despite punitive bombardments by the British, did not end their salve trade practices until the French conquest of Algeria in 1830.
